Alan Carr has opened up on his divorce from his husband Paul Drayton and gave an insight into his reasons behind the breakup. Comedian Alan, 45, and 50 year old Paul were together for 14 years before announcing their decision to part ways earlier this year. Following the announcement of their split, Alan has remained tightlipped on the breakdown of his marriage to Paul, who recently completed a rehab stint after his drink-drive crash.
Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on her eponymous ITV daytime show, Alan spoke highly of his ex Paul. He joked: "Me and Paul were together for 14 years, which in gay years is 207 years" before letting out a giggle.
Discussing how his split inspired material in his comedy tour, Alan added: "I wrote the tour and our marriage broke down during Covid because it was so stressful. "I was going on stage and I was just like, 'Well this doesn't make sense.' So we're divorced now." Alan then insisted the decision to split was for the best as he said: "He's excited for the future, I'm excited for the future. "We're still always going to be friends because we've been through so much together." He added of his tour: "It's one of my most personal stand up shows and I was writing it on the hoof because things were happening as I was on tour.
So it was very weird for me because normally once I've got the show done I know it works, I've got my little punchlines, got all my callbacks... "I was writing it as I was going along so it's really from the heart and it's quite emotional and it's fun and uplifting and everything. It was actually my therapy really."
