Despite the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Fall film festivals like Venice, TIFF, and NYFF forge ahead with their lineups. And today, TIFF announced the star-studded roster for its Gala and Special Presentation lineups for the 48th edition of the festival.

With the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) just a month away, the full lineup is beginning to take shape. Sure, we already know the majority of the films, but it appears the folks at the event still have one more surprise up their sleeves, as we get the announcement that “Sly” will be closing the festival.

Can twins successfully bring their parents back together? That sounds like the plot of “The Parent Trap,” but the similarities between that film and “Dicks: The Musical” (previously known as “F*cking Identical Twins“) end there. The new A24 film updates that old formula to instead present two adult businessmen with a similar secret.

It’s still unclear if a large contingent of actors will make their way to all the fall festivals this year due to the SAG strike, but the Toronto International Film Festival is confidently moving forward with its annual Tribute Awards. Recently added to the annual TIFF programming mix, the Tribute Awards honor not just actors (Michelle Yeoh was a recipient in 2022), but writers (who also may not be at TIFF due to their own strike), directors (who are available after a deal with the AMPTP), and other film industry contributors.

The Toronto International Film Festival is rounding out its slate. Last week the Galas and Special Presentations were revealed and yesterday the competitive Platform program was announced.

The Toronto Film Festival is almost a month away and that means there are more films still to be announced as part of the 2023 slate. Today, TIFF revealed the 10 movies selected as part of the competition Platform program.

Earlier this month, legendary Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki saw his first feature film in 10 years, “The Boy And The Heron,” hit Japanese theaters. Now North American audiences know when they’ll have their first chance to see the film before it releases theatrically on this continent: the 48th Toronto International Film Festival will be the Opening Night Gala Presentation.

There may not be as many big movie stars walking the red carpets at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but there will be a bountiful selection of anticipated films to discover. TIFF revealed the 60 galas and special presentations that will have their world premieres or screen in the Great White North this September including Craig Gillespie’s “Dumb Money,” George C.

With the WGA and SAG strikes happening right now, there are a lot of questions about what the fall film festival circuit will look like. Will studios pull films if they can’t have stars show up at the events? Will the events be delayed if they can’t produce a quality lineup of features? Well, even though we don’t know the answers to those questions, it appears it’s business as usual over at the Toronto International Film Festival, as the event has announced the first film to make its debut— “Seven Veils” from director Atom Egoyan.
