Titanic Sub Press Conference: Implosion Confirmed But Timing Unclear -- All Five Passengers Dead, More Details

The reason the story of the Titanic has entranced people for as long as it has, 111 years now to be exact, is the level of Greek mythos-like hubris it encapsulates. A “perfect storm” of disregarded safety warnings, human ego, and imperfect circumstances all led to the luxury liner’s sinking in April 1912.

Christopher Nolan Says AI Dangers Have Been ‘Apparent for Years,’ Press Covered It More Once Chatbots Threatened Their Jobs: ‘Suddenly It’s a Crisis’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Christopher Nolan got honest about artificial intelligence in a new interview with Wired magazine. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker says the writing has been on the wall about AI dangers for quite some time, but now the media is more focused on the technology because it poses a threat to their jobs. “The growth of AI in terms of weapons systems and the problems that it is going to create have been very apparent for a lot of years,” Nolan said. “Few journalists bothered to write about it. Now that there’s a chatbot that can write an article for a local newspaper, suddenly it’s a crisis.” Nolan said the main issue with AI is “a very simple one” and relates to the technology being used by companies to “evade responsibility for their actions.”

Dick Clark Productions, Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Acquire Golden Globe Awards as Hollywood Foreign Press Association Shutters

Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Big changes are afoot for the Golden Globe Awards now that Dick Clark Productions and Todd Boehly’s Eldridge have acquired the assets of the nonprofit Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which will shutter as the awards franchise moves into a new era. The new owners will use the assets and the cash on hand from the HFPA to establish the Golden Globe Foundation, which will continue on the HFPA’s tradition of charitable giving. The awards show itself and related assets will now be part of the for-profit operations of Dick Clark Productions, which has long been allied with the HFPA for the awards show. The move out of the HFPA’s nonprofit status will allow the Globes to pursue many more commercial opportunities than were possible under the HFPA regime.

Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour Canceled Due to Writers Strike, TCA Awards to Move Forward

Selome Hailu The Television Critics Association has opted to cancel its Summer 2023 press tour, which would have taken place in late July and early August, due to uncertainty regarding negotiations between Hollywood’s labor guilds and the studios. The news comes during the Writers Guild of America sixth week on strike, and as the Screen Actors Guild’s contract with the AMPTP approaches its June 30 expiration date. The Directors Guild of America’s contract also expires on June 30, though a strike by the DGA appears far less likely as its board unanimously approved a new agreement that is awaiting ratification from its membership, whereas SAG recently approved a strike authorization by a 97.9% vote.

Johnny Depp Forces 27-Minute Cannes Press Conference Delay After Being Stuck in Traffic

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Johnny Depp was 40 minutes late to the press conference for “Jeanne du Barry,” the period drama that opened the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night. Depp was stuck in traffic, according to a source close to his team, forcing the event to start 27 minutes behind schedule and without him. He also missed the earlier photo call with director and star Maïwenn and the rest of the cast of “Jeanne du Barry” due to the gridlock along the Croisette. Photographers were told that Depp would return to take pictures later in the afternoon. When he arrived at 12:41 p.m. (the conference was called for noon), everyone seated at the presser was able to hear cheers and applause before he walked into the room. When he got there, he expressed his appreciation for last night’s premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” A night earlier, the embattled actor held back tears as the audience embraced the film, starring Depp as King Louis XV, with a seven-minute standing ovation.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar Win Became ‘Unhealthy’ as People Turned Against Her for Sobbing Through Speech: ‘British Press Was Horrible to Me’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Gwyneth Paltrow said on a recent episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that her 1999 best actress Oscar win for “Shakespeare in Love” led to an unhealthy identity crisis. Paltrow was only 26 years old at the time when she won the Academy Award against the likes of Cate Blanchett (“Elizabeth”) and Meryl Streep (“One True King”). “Once I won the Oscar, it put me into a bit of an identity crisis, because if you win the biggest prize, like what are you supposed to do? And where are you supposed to go?” Paltrow said. “It was hard the amount of attention that you receive on a night like that and the weeks following, it’s so disorienting. And frankly, really unhealthy. I was like, ‘This is crazy. I don’t know what to do, I don’t know which way is up.’ It was a lot. Not that I would give it back or anything, it was an amazing experience, but it kind of called a lot of things into question for me.”
