Let’s put it out there quickly, “Sonic The Hedgehog” films—about the young anthropomorphic creatures that run at lightning speeds and become heroes of Earth—are no cinematic marvels or blockbuster essentials, and they’re arguably not super memorable either. But for what they are—light, charming escapes for kids that aren’t a chore to sit through for adults thanks to their breezy pace and charismatic actors — they’re fine little diversions (Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz being effective in their roles as quippy villains and heroes).

It’s wild to think that Jeremy Renner was facing life-threatening injuries in January 2023 following his snowplow accident. Yet, about a year later, he was on the set of his crime and prison industrial complex series, “Mayor Of Kingstown,” shooting a third season.

After three successful seasons, the supernatural drama series, “Evil” will return for its fourth and final installment this summer. Yesterday, Paramount+ revealed the official trailer and premiere date for the critically acclaimed original series.

Despite a near-fatal brush with death in the early new year of 2023, Jeremy Renner is back at it in the acting game, almost as if nothing ever happened. Miraculously healthy, healed, and back to work in early 2024, Renner is back for a third season of his Paramount+ series, “Mayor Of Kingstown,” about a power broker family whose main business is incarceration.

Having just completed a TV spin-off of his own movie, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” series based on the 2019 film of the same name (read our review here), filmmaker Guy Ritchie is going back to a similar well. This time, it’s TV to TV: Paramount+, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & 101 Studios announced that Ritchie will direct and executive produce “The Donovans,” a new series that will be loosely based on Showtime’s popular “Ray Donovan” show starring Liev Schreiber, and Irish award-winning screenwriter, producer, and novelist Ronan Bennett will pen all ten episodes of this new series.

It’s fascinating to watch certain eras of TV and filmmaking arrive when those eras are essentially over. And by that, I mean you’ll remember during the pandemic, to keep investors happy and to show them, “Don’t worry, no theaters won’t stop us from releasing content,” every studio under the sun greenlit a ton of spin-offs of their biggest brands.

Everyone remember filmmaker Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 British cult crime drama and debut feature, “Sexy Beast” with Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone? Of course you do, it’s a stone cold classic even if it is relatively straightforward compared to Glazer’s latter day more enigmatic masterpieces like “Under the Skin” (2013), and “The Zone of Interest” (the latter of which we named the Best Film of 2023).

Man, it’s wild that “The Curse,” the new Showtime series from Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, and Benny Safdie, got made. And or, maybe another way to say it is, if/when you package three immense talents and names like the aforementioned actor, writer/director, comedian, and filmmaker, you can really go for broke and push the envelope on the medium and what the audience can withstand and bear (more of this, please!) Very high on our list of the Most Anticipated TV Series of 2023, Showtime’s “The Curse” finally has a release date and will air November 10 on Paramount+ with Showtime ahead of its on-air Showtime debut on November 12, the network announced. From producers and writers Emma Stone, comedian Nathan Fielder, and Safdie Brothers filmmaker Benny Safdie—all of whom star, “The Curse,” is a bizarre genre-bending comedy series/riff on the Home Improvement series.

Writer/director Taylor Sheridan (“Wild River,” “Yellowstone,” “Hell Or High Water”) leaves no stone unturned in his exploration of both the Wild Wild West and the echoes of masculinity that still pervade within American culture. Whether it’s “Yellowstone,” a more contemporary look at cowboys and masculine figures created by their rugged environments, or “1883,” a classic Western tale of frontier life, Sheridan constantly reexamines this theme in all his work.

There have been plenty of films about someone who is killed and then comes back as some sort of ghost. But what if you were a teenager who was mysteriously killed and you were brought back as a ghost stuck in high school? That’s the hook of the new Paramount+ series, “School Spirits.” As seen in the new teaser, “School Spirits” follows the story of a teen girl who is killed and sent to a weird ghostly afterlife where she is stuck in high school surrounded by other teen ghosts.

Fans of Disney+‘s “Loki” may need to wait a while for the premiere of season two, but Owen Wilson‘s next superhero adventure will be out before the summer is over. And this time, Wilson gets to be the one with the superpowers.

One of the benefits of having so many streaming services is that we are seeing new features and TV shows from filmmakers that might not have been given a chance previously. Or at least, they wouldn’t have such a high-profile first project such as Sanaa Lathan’s directorial debut, “On the Come Up,” which is debuting on Paramount+.
