With “Joker’s” stunning 11 Oscar nominations — the most of any film this year — director Todd Phillips’ gritty reimagining of the Batman villain has followed in “Black Panther’s” historic footsteps and taken a massive thwack at the ironclad conventional wisdom that comic-book movies cannot be major awards season contenders.

The biggest grosser in the R Rated category Joker is dominating the Oscar 2020 nominations list. The film which saw Joaquin Phoenix in the lead as Joker has managed to bag 11 nominations.

Making Oscars history, “Joker” joins “Black Panther” as only the second comic book movie ever to earn a nomination for best picture. It’s also the first film adapted from the canon of DC Comics characters to be nominated for the Oscar’s top prize. And, with a record 11 nominations, “Joker” is also the first comic book movie to earn the most nominations of any film in a given year.

Now that the Golden Globes ceremony has come and gone, film fans can look forward to the Oscars as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces the nominations for the 92nd annual awards show on Monday. This year’s selections will be revealed via global livestream from the Oscars’ official websites Oscars.com and Oscars.org, as well as the Academy’s social media channels. The announcement will begin at 5:18 a.m. PT/8:18 a.m. ET.
