BAFTAs 2022: host Rebel Wilson gives middle finger to Vladimir Putin

BAFTAs are being held in London tonight (March 13), and host Rebel Wilson began the night by giving the middle finger to Russian President Vladimir Putin.Putin invaded Ukraine on February 24 and the entertainment community has been sharing their support for the country and its people. To open tonight’s BAFTAs, the organisation’s chairman Krishnendu Majumdar read out a speech which said (via the Hollywood Reporter): “Together with our colleagues at the Ukrainian Film Academy, we stand in solidarity and hope for a return to peace.“We’re hugely grateful to the journalists covering Ukraine, many of whom are BAFTA members. Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as well as those affected by other conflicts around the world.”After Wilson discussed how Emilia Jones’ musical performance on the show would be aided by a pair of sign language interpreters, she then said: “And in all sign languages, this is the gesture for Putin,” before raising her middle finger, which was blurred out by the BBC.Leading the nominees for the 2022 BAFTAs is Denis Villeneuve’s Dune with a huge 11 nominations, while Licorice Pizza and No Time To Die are also up for multiple gongs.Dame Shirley Bassey opened the BAFTA Film Awards 2022 ceremony with a performance of iconic James Bond song ‘Diamonds Are Forever’.Before the ceremony, Rebel Wilson made a playful jibe at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Australian actor, known for roles in Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect, appeared on ITV’s This Morning in an interview with Alison Hammond.During the interview, Hammond asked Wilson how she was feeling ahead of the BAFTAs.

Dame Shirley Bassey to perform James Bond theme at BAFTAs 2022

Dame Shirley Bassey will open the BAFTA Film Awards 2022 ceremony with a performance of an iconic James Bond song, it’s been reported.According to Deadline, the 85-year-old singer is due to make a special appearance at the 75th BAFTAs, which take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London next Sunday (March 13) and will be hosted by Rebel Wilson. The outlet claims that Bassey will mark the 60th anniversary of the Bond franchise with a live airing of a well-known theme from a past film, though the chosen track will remain under wraps until the night.Bassey is the only artist to have recorded multiple songs for the Bond series, having soundtracked the classic films Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker. The singer’s ‘Goldfinger’ (1964) landed at Number Four in NME‘s ranking of every James Bond theme; ‘Moonraker’ (1979) and ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ (1971) appear at Number 20 and Number Nine respectively.Back in 2020, Bassey praised Billie Eilish’s No Time To Die theme, saying that the pop star “did a good job”. “It’s a big honour for a young artist to live up to the Bond expectation,” the singer explained. No Time To Die star Lashana Lynch is up for the EE Rising Star Award at the BAFTAs 2022.

BAFTA drops special awards for 2022 after Noel Clarke sexual misconduct allegations

report was published in The Guardian which saw 20 women accuse Clarke of sexual harassment and misconduct. The actor, who denied the claims, was suspended by BAFTA following the allegations. The organisation, however, faced scrutiny after the original report claimed BAFTA had been aware of the allegations before it handed Clarke the award. The awards body stated it had received “anonymous emails and reports of allegations via intermediaries”, but said “no evidence was provided” that would enable an investigation to take place. After launching a review into the processes governing the awards last year, involving “extensive industry consultations”, BAFTA announced there’ll be no special recognition awards at the film and game awards in 2022 to allow enough time to implement changes on how recipients are chosen.
