“He’s not alone anymore.” Against seemingly all odds, given its R-rating, adult nature, and disconnection from traditional cinema superheroics, Warner Bros. “Joker” movie earned over $1 billion at the box office in 2019, the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year, even outgrossing “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” worldwide.
Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many of original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery. Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at last 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland.
After directing the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films (2003–2007) and the animated movie “Rango” (2011), which won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Animated Film, things have been relatively quiet for director Gore Verbinski. “The Lone Ranger” was an expensive disappointment at the box office, and the back-to-basic “A Cure for Wellness” was well-respected but kind of came and went.

Though the SAG and WGA strikes are seemingly going strong without much of an end in sight, that doesn’t mean all of Hollywood has come to a halt. There are still films being produced thanks to interim agreements, which allow independent studios to continue to film as long as they agree to the demands made by SAG.

A few weeks back, trailer editor Andrew Hegele got Film Twitter in a tizzy with his rundown of the great contemporary American filmmakers—and how long it’s been since they’ve made a contemporary movie. The sixth season of “Black Mirror,” Charlie Brooker’s award-winning anthology series that Netflix turned into an original in 2016, might be the most inconsistent in the show’s history. Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Zazie Beetz, Dominque Fishback, Dianna Agron and more stars braved the New York City rain Monday evening to attend the 16th annual Tribeca Artists Dinner. Hosted by Chanel at SoHo restaurant Balthazar, the event was thrown in tribute to the 10 women visual artists who contributed their work to projects featured in the 2023 Tribeca Festival, organized by festival chiefs Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. This group of honorees included Ana Benaroya, Beverly Fishman, Christie Neptume, Lisa Lebofsky, Natia Lemay, Patricia Encarnacion, Renee Cox, Sheree Hovsepian, Shinique Smith and Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz. “When you’re 22, you’ve gotten out of those teenage years. We’ll have a full review of the series later, but here’s what we learned at Tribeca — both from the first two episodes and the Q&A that followed.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director The latest batch of production photos from the “Joker: Folie à Deux” set reveal Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix dancing on the Bronx staircase made famous in the first “Joker” movie. One of the more memorable scenes in the 2019 film featured Joaquin Phoenix dancing maniacally to Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll Part 2” while on a staircase near Shakespeare Avenue in the Bronx, New York.
