Universal Music Group Backlot Fire Class Action Lawsuit Dismissed by Judge

A federal judge has dismissed a class action lawsuit against Universal Music Group over a 2008 warehouse fire that a New York Times Magazine report last year claimed destroyed up to 500,000 master recordings in the the record company's archive vaults.The class action lawsuit was initially filed June 21, 2019, in California with claims by Soundgarden, Steve Earle, Hole, the estate of Tupac Shakur and by Jane Petty, Tom Petty's ex-wife and heir to 50% of his recording agreements.

Steve Earle has pulled out of a lawsuit against Universal Music Group that was filed by five artists last year over damage the artists’ musical recordings suffered in a 2008 fire that destroyed many assets in the company’s vaults. With the withdrawal from the lawsuit earlier this month of the Tupac Estate and Soundgarden, and withdrawal last year of the group Hole, this leaves only the contested estate of Tom Petty.

The lawsuit against Universal Music Group over original recordings that were believed to be lost in a 2008 fire continues to thin as Soundgarden and Tupac Shakur's estate on Friday dropped their claims.In June, UMG was sued on behalf of five artists whose master recordings were feared to have been destroyed in the 2008 fire on Universal's backlot: Soundgarden, Tupac Shakur, Tom Petty, Hole and Steve Earle.Now, only Jane Petty and Earle remain as plaintiffs.

Tom Petty’s Widow and Daughters Settle Legal Battle Over Estate

Tom Petty’s widow Dana and his daughters Adria and Annakim are ending a legal battle over who will manage his estate. Earlier this year, Petty’s two daughters from a previous marriage sued his widow for $5 million, arguing that their decision-making rights over his management were being superseded. In a press release today, the three announce that they have “resolved their differences and dismissed all litigation matters that had been filed related to Tom’s estate.”
