Vampire Weekend Reinvent Their Sound (Again) With ‘Only God Was Above Us’: Album Review

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music A major problem with early success is getting past it — case in point, the cheerful bop of Vampire Weekend’s first two albums and their image as peppy college boys who’d studied Paul Simon’s “Graceland” like a James Joyce masters’ thesis, playing their jaunty global pop to deliriously skanking millennials at seemingly every music festival of the latter aughts. And although that take was understandable — if unfairly reductive — at the time, VW is now a very different band.

“The Sound of Silence” — the chart-topping classic that had Simon & Garfunkel making all kinds of noise after their 1964 debut.“I used to go into the bathroom of my parents’ house. There was tile on the wall, and I’d turn the water on,” recalls Paul Simon — who wrote the duo’s first hit — in the two-part documentary “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” which premieres on MGM+ Sunday and continues on March 24.“And the tile made the echo, and the water was like a white noise sound.

What time is Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie on Disney+?

Taylor Swift’s blockbuster concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, finally arrives on Disney+ this week, but what time will it be available?During the film’s cinematic run in late 2023, it earned over $250million at the box office, making it comfortably the highest-grossing concert film of all time.News of its impending arrival on Disney+ was confirmed last month, with the streaming service saying that the version on offer will be the ‘Taylor’s Version’ cut of the film, which includes the performance of ‘Cardigan’, as well as four acoustic songs that were removed from the theatrical edit.Check out the latest trailer for the new version of the film:In a four star review, NME wrote about the film: “It’s a staggering feat. In the space of one seamless performance, Swift is at turns a playfully eccentric artist, a country star and a genuine pop icon… Of course, as The Eras Tour proves time and again, Taylor Swift can do pretty much whatever she wants.”Swift announced at last month’s Grammy Awards that she is set to release a new album, titled ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, on April 19.The record will mark her 11th studio album.

How ‘We Are the World’ created ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ 4 decades ago

“We Are the World,” the historic 1985 charity single — where even Bob Dylan was intimidated by the star-studded session.Surrounded by everyone from Ray Charles, Diana Ross and Paul Simon to Tina Turner, Willie Nelson and Billy Joel, the Bard was clearly out of sorts — and out of his element. But it took one particular legend to help another one find his solo mojo.“The secret agent to help him get comfortable was Stevie Wonder,” says David Breskin — one of two journalists invited by producer Quincy Jones to cover the momentous occasion — in the documentary. “Stevie is an insanely great mimic,” continues Breskin, explaining how the R&B master used his special talents to help the folk god: “Stevie sang it ventriloquially in Dylan’s voice.”It’s a dead-on impression that impresses even Dylan, who — in the only time the room is cleared to give one artist his space — finally nails his part.Such is the spirit of unity that — against all odds and egos — pulled together the recording of “We Are the World” on Jan.

The curse of the pop duo — from Simon & Garfunkel to Hall & Oates

the Hall & Oates drama continues — with Daryl Hall suing John Oates and getting a restraining order against his longtime partner to block the sale of his share of their publishing royalties to Primary Wave — it’s clear that being in one of music’s biggest duos isn’t always the stuff of making your dreams come true.In fact, being in a duo — as opposed to a band — has been a particularly difficult musical marriage to negotiate throughout pop history. It’s a curse that Hall & Oates managed to avoid for five decades until it even caught up to them deep into their 70s.Here are some other top twosomes who ultimately became out of touch. The Tennessee twosome of Don Everly and his younger brother, Phil, were early rock pioneers in the late ’50s with hits such as “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie” and “All I Have to Do Is Dream.” But all was not as smooth as their harmonies for the brothers. After they both enlisted in the Marines in 1961, they had relatively little success once they were discharged.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The first thing to say about Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” is that it’s three-and-a-half hours long. Normally I wouldn’t lead with that daunting fact, especially since the film is mostly marvelous: a documentary that every Paul Simon fan on earth should want to see and experience. But will they? I raise the issue only because “In Restless Dreams” has come into the Toronto Film Festival without a distributor, and let’s just be honest: The 209-minute running time, when you hear about it, doesn’t exactly sound…user-friendly.
