HBO has tapped Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov (Closeness, Beanpole) to direct the pilot episode of HBO’s upcoming drama series The Last of Us, the adaptation of the PlayStation video game, from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, game creator Neil Druckmann and Game of Thrones exec producer Carolyn Strauss.

The more that comes out about the HBO series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us, the more exciting this project sounds. The game, as well as its sequel, are landmarks for video games, telling moving and serious stories in a way any film would be jealous of.

Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II swept The Game Awards on Thursday. A follow up to the original 2013 video game, The Last of Us Part II took home a total of seven awards at Geoff Keighley’s annual awards show.

Naughty Dog, having spent the last three years as vice president at the development studio.Druckmann was the creative director of Uncharted 4 and both The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us: Part II. He has worked at Naughty Dog for his entire time in the games industry, beginning as a programming intern on Jak 3.

'Chernobyl' showrunner Craig Mazin is behind the video game adaptation

The popular action-adventure survival horror video game, The Last of Us is all set to be adapted as an HBO series and the project will be helmed by Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin. Neil Druckmann, the creator of the original game, will join Craig in developing the project. They will pen the script and also serve as the executive producers, The Verge reported. The video game, which came out in 2013, is set in the post-apocalyptic United States where a fungal plague nearly destroyed humanity. 

A television adaptation of Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic action game, The Last of Us, is now in the works at HBO. The adaptation, which is intended to be a series, will be led by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, with game director Neil Druckmann helping to pen the script and executive-produce the series.
