It’s a bit of a Renaissance moment for Frankenstein related projects, no? “Poor Things” obviously cribs from Mary Shelley‘s 1818 novel, and well, it’s all the name when it comes to “Lisa Frankenstein.” Then there’s Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming take for Netflix, which announced its cast earlier this week. Now add Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s latest directing effort to the list.

It will be the Mexican director’s first feature film since 2022’s Pinocchio, and his thirteenth directorial feature overall.

Even though the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’s monster fable “Poor Things” has been confirmed to have its Venice premiere, Searchlight Pictures has postponed the cinema release of the film.

Even though the film is set to make its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things from director Yorgos Lanthimos is delaying its release and will now open in theaters on Dec. 8. The film, which was originally set to open on Sept. 8, stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe with Lanthimos directing.

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Sky Deutschland, the German arm of Comcast-owned pay-TV operator Sky, is pulling out of scripted originals from 2024, Variety can reveal. Staff were notified of the surprise move by Sky Deutschland boss Devesh Raj on Thursday morning, local time. Variety understands that the entire scripted originals team will eventually be disbanded, though shows that have already been commissioned and are in production, such as post-apocalypse drama “Helgoland 513″ and “Das Boot” Season 4, will finish filming. Any projects in development will be “put into turnaround,” as per another internal note from Sky Studios CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz, also seen by Variety.

Her mother died of a stray bullet, her brother a victim of street violence and her father might be on his way due to substance abuse. She hypothesizes that death is a disease and like any disease it can be cured. With that introduction, writer-director Bomani J. Story lays the thesis for this new take on Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” But “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster” has more on its mind than just adapting that horror classic once more. It infuses a contemporary American social critique onto the familiar plot and characters.

Sources tell Variety that Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are in early talks to star in Netflix’s live-action “Frankenstein” movie, which del Toro will write and direct. Del Toro has been developing the project, based on English author Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, for several years, but it’s unclear how faithful he intends to interpret the source material. “Frankenstein” is part of the filmmaker’s multi-year deal with Netflix, where del Toro has a number of projects in various stages of development. Conversations about “Frankenstein” are in the very early stages, sources tell Variety.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Ahead of its world premiere at SXSW, RLJE Films and its sister brands under AMC Networks have acquired the North American rights to the horror/thriller, “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster.” Those brands include Shudder and AllBlk, all of which share a parent company. The horror-thriller is debuting in the Austin-based festival’s “Visions” category, a special program that “champions audacious, risk-taking artists in the new cinema landscape.” The movie follows a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, the teen embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. It’s a journey inspired by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Following in the slipstream of Shudder’s surprise hit Skinamarink, Laura Moss’ birth/rebirth is a similarly non-conforming horror, this time one that prioritizes its intriguing but somewhat underdeveloped conceit above the traditional trappings of its genre. Very loosely inspired by Mary Shelley’s 19th century novel Frankenstein, the film centers on a decidedly post-modern Prometheus: by making its central scientist female rather than male, Moss’ feature debut short-circuits the usual blunt clichés of a crazy scientist bent on defying nature and instead enters the realm of David Cronenberg’s ’80s heyday with its focus on the human anatomy as a battleground for shady ethics.
