Even though it’s only been several months since the release of “The Invisible Man,” director Leigh Whannell’s horror film is a huge hit and has pretty much laid out the blueprint for how to reinvent the Universal Monsters brand for the modern era.

While “The Invisible Man” cemented Leigh Whannell as one of the best new directors working in genre films, many people credit his directorial debut, “Upgrade,” for really showing how special he is. Unfortunately, for as great as “Upgrade” is, the film wasn’t a massive box office success, leading many to wonder if we’d ever see a continuation of the sci-fi story.

In today’s film news roundup, “The Invisible Man” hits a milestone; “Kajillionaire,” “Come Play” and “Green Rush” get release dates; and Jack Eve’s romantic drama “Open” wraps shooting.

When Benjamin Wallfisch learned that he was going to compose the score for the 2020 reboot of “The Invisible Man,” he deliberately stayed away from rewatching the 1933 original. The goal, he says, was “to keep the sound as fresh as possible.”

One of the first conversations production designer Alex Holmes had with “The Invisible Man” director Leigh Whannell was about grounding the film in reality and treating it like a psychological thriller, rather than a horror or science-fiction movie.

LOS ANGELES -- The Elisabeth Moss-led thriller “The Invisible Man” rode a wave of good reviews to a very visible spot atop the box office this weekend. Universal Pictures on Sunday estimated that the film from writer-director Leigh Whannell earned $29 million from North American theaters. Internationally, it picked up an additional $20.2 million.

You might say that many moviegoers "saw" Leigh Whannell and Elisabeth Moss' The Invisible Man in theaters yesterday. The Dark Universe may be dead, but Universal’s monster mash is alive and well thanks to some old-fashioned showmanship.

In 2018, director Leigh Whannell met with Universal Pictures executives, thinking that they wanted to talk about another project. Instead, they brought up a surprising idea, to reinvent H.G. Wells’ “The Invisible Man” as a stand-alone thriller targeted to a new generation. 

Elisabeth Moss had a hands-on role in editing her new flick The Invisible Man to ensure the movie did right by the female point of view.

Bad movies are one thing, but there’s a more potent disappointment reserved for ones that coulda been contenders.

Unraveling the dusted bandages of H.G. Wells’ classic 1897 science-fiction novel, writer-director Leigh Whannell has refashioned “The Invisible Man” as a bracingly modern #MeToo allegory that, despite its brutal craft, rings hollow.

Finding the next great horror movie within a classic Universal monster? Especially after the quick collapse of the Dark Universe, that wouldn’t have seemed incredibly likely, even just a year or so ago. However, in Blumhouse we trust.

Though perhaps better known as a writer and actor, The Invisible Man marks Leigh Whannell’s third turn as a director. His first foray into life behind the lens came with Insidious: Chapter Three, the third film set in the series that he created and starred in.
