Jon Bernthal Says Shia LaBeouf Aggressively Questioned Why David Ayer Wanted To Make ‘Suicide Squad’ While Meeting About It With An A-List Actor

It’s a decent film, nowhere close to a masterpiece, but the stories of the making of David Ayer’s WWII tank drama “Fury” are nearly legendary. Ayer put his cast, including Brad Pitt, through a rigorous boot camp; they all took it very, very seriously, bonded, and seemingly all started acting the part of tough guy soldiers in real life when cameras weren’t even rolling.

‘Origin’ Review: Ava DuVernay Adapts Isabel Wilkerson’ ‘Caste’ With Dazzling Inventiveness [Venice]

When Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) first conceived of the multifaceted premise that would eventually become the lauded non-fiction book “Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents,” her editors were concerned about whether she would manage to cohesively merge her personal experiences with all the moving parts of her research across cultures and continents to prove that it all interconnects.   Venice Film Festival 2023: The 17 Most Anticipated Movies To Watch That’s in turn the same task that writer-director Ava DuVernay faced to convey the big-picture ideas and Wilkerson’s revelatory odyssey to put them on the page in an enticingly cinematic manner.

‘Suicide Squad’: David Ayer Clarifies His Cut Is A “Possibility,” But James Gunn Wants “Scores On The Board” First

Despite its disputes being more than seven years old, David Ayer’s 2016 superhero film, “Suicide Squad,” continues to be a source of controversy for dejected fans online and a point of contention for the filmmaker. Part of it is because “Suicide Squad” was a vestige of the old Zach Snyder-led DC Universe, which is no more, and part of it is because the film was apparently tampered with beyond belief.

Oliver Platt Talks ‘Complexity’ of Playing Uncle Jimmy on ‘The Bear’: ‘You Don’t Know If He’s Going to Shake You or Give You a Hug’

Emily Longeretta It seems thatever since the pandemic, time has been flying by more quickly. That’s evident in TV awards season, as current buzz on the internet focuses heavily on “The Bear” Season 2, but somehow, there hasn’t been an Emmys yet that recognized Season 1. The first season of the FX on Hulu comedy-drama — it’s nominated in the comedy category, at least for its first 10-episode installment — dropped in June 2022, right after the last Emmy eligibility window closed.

‘The Walking Dead’ Finally Gets Its Emmy Moment — Sorta — and Other Trivia From 2023’s Nominations

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Remember AMC’s “The Walking Dead”? You know, the biggest series on TV at one time. Most-watched basic cable show in history, and I can guarantee that will never be topped. But yet, an Emmy dud. The series (which will live on via a frenzy of spin-offs) ended its run last November after 11 seasons… and it’s still ignored by TV Academy voters, failing to pick up a single nomination on Wednesday. And yet… this may have been the most successful year at the Emmys ever for “The Walking Dead.” That’s because two of the franchise’s most beloved actors, Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthal, picked up their first-ever Emmy nominations. Granted, it’s not for “The Walking Dead” — Yeun is nominated in lead limited/anthology actor for “Beef” and Bernthal is a comedy guest actor nominee for “The Bear” (which is about… Chicago’s “Beef” restaurant) — but at least it’s a belated victory for two actors that made a name for themselves by fighting zombies.

In Season 2 of “The Bear,” Jeremy Allen White’s Carmen Berzatto finally let his walls down and explored interests outside the kitchen. It didn’t work out well for him — but he did try. Carmy also had to balance his friendship and working relationship with partner Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), who kept her eye on the prize when he seemingly became distracted. Throughout the second season, viewers also learned more about Carmy’s upbringing, specifically in the star-studded sixth episode, “Fishes.” That episode was a flashback to the family’s last Christmas together, with Jamie Lee Curtis appearing as his troubled mother, and Jon Bernthal returning as his brother, Michael, on the verge of a breakdown.

‘The Bear’: Jon Bernthal Breaks Down ‘F—ing Tense’ Dinner Scene With Bob Odenkirk, That Improvised Table Flip and Mikey’s ‘Ugliness’

Emily Longeretta SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 of “The Bear,” now streaming on Hulu. “Fishes,” the sixth episode of “The Bear” Season 2, flashes back to the last Berzatto Christmas. In one of the most exciting episodes of TV this year, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bob Odenkirk, John Mulaney and Sarah Paulson join the chaotic family for a stress-inducing dinner sequence, which also features the return of Jon Bernthal as Michael.
