Joe Otterson TV Reporter FX‘s John Landgraf is not sure the media ecosystem supports television shows that run beyond just a few seasons. “I think our attention spans have declined radically and I think our patience with things that are a little demanding have gone down,” Landgraf said during his annual executive session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “It’s something I’m really worried about in the media ecosystem created by the internet.” The remarks came after Landgraf gave his annual update on the number of scripted series on television, with his data showing that Peak TV has in fact peaked.

RELATED: If SAG-AFTRA Goes Out, How Fast Will WGA Go Back in to Negotiations With AMPTP? After a decade of staggering growth in series production, the Great Contraction was destined to hit the creative community. The Writers Guild of America strike that began May 2 has accelerated the pace of the pruning of content and deals, but the driving force is less the work stoppage and more Hollywood’s reckoning with the changing economics of streaming. Given all these factors, FX chief John Landgraf’s long-standing prediction of a major contraction in the number of scripted shows in the marketplace will finally come to pass.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large If this year’s Emmy ballots are any indication, the era of Peak TV may truly be over — which FX boss John Landgraf has of course been predicting for some time. There are 163 dramas, 95 comedies and 51 limited/anthology series that have been submitted — down from 171 dramas, 118 comedies and 61 limited/anthology series last year. That’s still a lot of TV, but with fewer contenders comes the possibility of more dark horses getting noticed.
Ryan Murphy looks to be heading back to Disney.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large That’s true for novelists as much as it is for screenwriters. Often those are one and the same — and because we live in an age where pre-sold IP usually makes it easier to sell a TV project, there have never been more series based on books than there are right now.

Plot and character details are being kept under tight wraps on the project, which was first announced in December 2020. The only detail that has been confirmed is that the show will take place on Earth in the not-too-distant future. The role brings Chandler back to FX, as she previously made her network television debut in the cabler’s 2022 limited series “Pistol” from Danny Boyle, which told the story of the legendary band The Sex Pistols. Chandler starred in the series as Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. Chandler’s other credits include the film “Don’t Worry Darling” and the Facebook Watch series “SKAM Austin.” She is also set to appear in the upcoming Apple series “Sugar” opposite Colin Farrell.
Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor FX chief John Landgraf and ABC programming head Simran Sethi will expand their duties under an executive shuffle at Disney’s TV operations, one of the first big moves under Dana Walden, who was assigned responsibility for the company’s TV networks after Bob Iger returned as Disney’s CEO. Landgraf will take oversight of National Geographic as well as Onyx Collective, the production unit devoted to projects from communities of color and underrepresented groups. Sethi, meanwhile, will oversee programming and development for both ABC and Freeform. She will continue to report to Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. The moves comes as Tara Duncan, who had been supervising programming for both Onyx Collective and Freeform, will devote her attention solely to Onyx, freeing up the programming duties for Sethi, who had a previous tenure at the cable network.
