The Society of Composers & Lyricists’ announced the winners of its 3rd Annual SCL Awards this evening at The Skirball Cultural Center. The event, which was hosted by rapper Aloe Blacc, recognizes composers and songwriters in all visual media.

Best Picture Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” seems to have taken pole position in the best picture race. Campion won a screenplay Oscar at the 1994 ceremony for “The Piano,” which was also nominated for best pic (it lost to “Schindler’s List.”). Early front-runner “Belfast” should also make the ballot.

Stuart Miller Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” is, among other things, visually gripping, a stark, haunting dreamscape that often seems to exist outside of time. While the film is carried by Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, much has been made — justifiably — of Kathryn Hunter’s eerily limber witch: you can’t look away as she bends and contorts, calling to mind a real-life Smeagol.But the movie starts with a whiteout, and so we hear Hunter before we see her. It pulls viewers in and reinforces the notion that this nimble performance (she is echoed into all three witches) is not merely a physical marvel or a gimmick.

TheWrap: When you came on board the film in 2019, was it clear that Joel Coen already had the movie in his head?Stefan Dechant: Absolutely. He had defined the look of the film, and Joel and [cinematographer] Bruno Delbonnel had been talking about the project for a year or more. They had amassed a collection of photographs and they were starting to categorize them per scene.

This is the first nomination for all three acclaimed filmmakers.Joel Coen, a two-time nominee for “No Country for Old Men” (2007), for which he won with his brother Ethan, and “True Grit” (2010), was recognized for adapting his black-and-white interpretation of “The Tragedy of Macbeth” for Apple Original Films and A24.

More than 400 years after writing “Macbeth,” William Shakespeare has been nominated for a Hollywood award for his early 17th-century classic. “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” director Joel Coen’s adaptation of the Bard’s tragedy, has been named a finalist at the 34th annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards, where the nominations go to both the screenwriter of an adaptation and the original author on which the adaptation is based.On a list unveiled by USC Libraries on Wednesday morning, Shakespeare is joined by three other deceased authors and one who is (probably) still alive but refuses to reveal her (?) real name.

Not only does “The Tragedy of Macbeth” feature two of the biggest actors on the planet, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, but the film is directed by Joel Coen, one of the best filmmakers working today. But as seen in the new Making-Of featurette, “The Tragedy of Macbeth” isn’t relying solely on the two actors and the director to make the film memorable.

While the fact that Joel Coen has ventured off by himself to craft the new Apple TV+ film, “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” might be surprising to some, considering he worked the past 40-ish years alongside his brother Ethan, that doesn’t mean there’s any sort of bad blood between the two brothers. That said, Joel Coen does admit that he would have never had the chance to make ‘Macbeth’ if he continued his relationship with Ethan.

William Shakespeare, the Bard himself, needs no introduction. Nor, arguably, does Joel Coen, who has been one of American cinema’s great voices for almost forty years with his brother Ethan.

Sounds like the Society of Composers & Lyricists has its nominees. The third annual SCL Awards honor music in visual media — film, TV, streaming, interactive — spanning seven categories plus the David Raksin Award for Emerging Talent. Read the full list of nominations below.
