Guillermo del Toro, Jane Campion, Nicole Holofcener, Danny Strong, Jeymes Samuel, and Ashley Lyle & Bart Nickerson are the honorees for screenwriting excellence at the 17th annual Final Draft Awards, which will be presented in a virtual ceremony March 16.

Guillermo del Toro, Jane Campion and Jeymes Samuel are among the honorees for this year’s Final Draft Awards recognizing achievements in screenwriting. Also being recognized at the 17th annual awards ceremony will be Nicole Holofcener, Danny Strong, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.

Jane Campion’s “The Power Of The Dog” is the big winner of the Alliance Of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) annual EDA Awards.

This year’s most-nominated film, “The Power of the Dog,” swept the awards with wins in 11 out of 25 categories including best film, best director for Jane Campion, supporting actress for Kirsten Dunst and adapted screenplay.“Although our beloved film industry was plagued by the pandemic, 2021 turned out to be a rather magnificent year for movies — especially for films made by and about women,” said AWFJ president Jennifer Merin.

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and animation features, with nominees in the top categories including Licorice Pizza, Cruella, Dune, In The Heights, The White Lotus and Encanto.

Campion assembled a crew of accomplished artisans to craft her stark vision of a cattle rancher, George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), who brings home a new wife, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), only to have his brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) mock and taunt her.These four featurettes explore the artistry behind the film’s cinematography, production design, editing and sound, all of which were vital in shaping the drama’s story and tone.  CinematographyBefore production began, cinematographer Ari Wegner spent an entire year working with Campion to develop a slow-moving visual style designed to draw out tension and conflict between the characters.“Color was one of the big early conversations,” says Wegner.

A few years back, when Maggie Gyllenhaal was making The Kindergarten Teacher with Pie Films’ producing partners Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren, the idea arose that Gyllenhaal herself should direct a project. Securing the rights to Elena Ferrante’s novel, The Lost Daughter, Gyllenhaal re-teamed with Pie Films, crafted her first feature script and cast Olivia Colman as Leda, a middle-aged woman whose past haunts her when she meets a young woman on vacation. Amid a Covid-driven location switch to Greece and quarantine with her film-family, Gyllenhaal crafted a feature filled with eviscerating but necessary truths about motherhood and all its complexity.

EXCLUSIVE: Jane Campion will have some new hardware on her mantel come March. The Power of the Dog writer-director and Oscar-winning The Piano scribe is set to receive the Art Directors Guild’s 2022 Cinematic Imagery Award.

Nominations were revealed Wednesday for the 34th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and episodic TV adaptations along with he works on which they are based. Winners will be unveiled at a planned in-person ceremony February 26 at USC’s Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library.

That résumé includes Oscar-nominated turns in movies like The Imitation Game and Emmy-winning work in the iconic Sherlock Holmes series. It also includes a banner 2021 not only with his critically acclaimed SAG- and Critics Choice-nominated Oscar-buzzed performance in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, but also praised work in The Courier, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, as well as reprising Dr. Peter Strange in the uber-blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home. 

As she woke up this morning, Kirsten Dunst was thrilled to learn that she’d received a SAG nomination. “To be nominated by your fellow actors, is just the greatest feeling,” Dunst says. “I just wish we could be together to celebrate. That’s the only thing I hope, that I get to see everyone and we get to be together and have some fun.”

AARP announced the nominees for its upcoming Movies for Grownups Awards today which, for the second year now, also includes candidates for TV and streaming “Bests.”

In a year where Chloe Zhao won the Best Director Oscar for “Nomadland” and went on to release one of the biggest box office successes of 2021 with Marvel Studios’ “Eternals,” it appears the year, as a whole, was fairly disappointing when it comes to the gender gap in filmmaking. After 2020 saw reasonable gains in parity amongst female and male filmmakers, 2021 has taken a step back, according to a new survey.

Despite the continuing challenges of the pandemic, it was a year of highlights from film festivals around the world.

The New York Film Critics Circle anointed “Drive My Car” as the Best Film of 2021 and now the West Coast critics have had their say. After almost six hours of overall deliberations, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association also selected “Drive My Car” as their Best Film of the year with “The Power of the Dog” as runner-up.

New Zealander and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jane Campion (“The Piano”) is one of the greatest filmmakers working today and so it’s perhaps no surprise that her latest film, Netflix‘s “The Power Of The Dog” is one of the best films of 2021, atop many critics list and seems bound for Oscar-accolades (it is right at the top of our Best Films of 2021 list too, and our review described it as “cinematic poetry“).
