Margot Robbie and Stylist Andrew Mukamal Team for ‘Barbie: The World Tour’ Fashion Photo Book

Angelique Jackson We’re living in the age of “Barbie,” and nowhere has that been more evident than the custom fashions Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal curated for the billion-dollar grossing movie’s press tour. Since debuting the first look at “Barbie” at CinemaCon in April 2022, Robbie has rocked Barbiecore styles on nearly every red carpet and press appearance (most recently stunning in custom Armani inspired by 1977’s Superstar Barbie at the Golden Globes), all of which will now be commemorated in the fashion photo book “Barbie: The World Tour.” “This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the ‘Barbie’ press tour in March 2023,” Mukamal wrote in an Instagram post revealing the book cover — which features a Barbie-fied Robbie clad in a pink Chanel suit.

Oliver Stone has suggested that Ryan Gosling is “wasting his time” making films like Barbie.Gosling played the role of Ken in last year’s hit Greta Gerwig film, earning huge acclaim including a recent BAFTA nomination for Supporting Actor. However, Stone – who has helmed films such as Platoon and JFK – criticised the film in a resurfaced interview with City A.M. from last year, hitting out at a “ridiculous” joke suggestion from Mattel’s boss that he could direct a Barbie sequel.“Ryan Gosling is wasting his time if he’s doing that shit for money,” Stone added. “He should be doing more serious films. He shouldn’t be a part of this infantilization of Hollywood.“Now it’s all fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all the war pictures: fantasy, fantasy.

Jodie Foster Says Warner Bros. Giving Greta Gerwig ‘All the Money to Support’ Her ‘Barbie’ Vision Is ‘New for Women Directors’: ‘I Hope It Continues’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Jodie Foster said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible while at the Sundance Film Festival that the $1.4 billion success of “Barbie” helps prove that Hollywood no longer views women directors as too much of a risk. That wasn’t always the case, as Foster often saw women filmmakers being marginalized during her career ascent in Hollywood. “I’ve had the beauty of being able to be in the business since the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and so on,” Foster said to Variety’s Rebecca Rubin.

5 Takeaways From BAFTA Noms: Lily Gladstone’s Snub, ‘Barbie’s’ Underperformance and More

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The BAFTA film nominations offered jaw-droppers and a couple of head-scratchers with their inclusions (and exclusions) this year. Always an interesting precursor to the Oscars, the past few years have produced less overlap between them, partially due to jury intervention in compiling the nominees. That makes deciphering what the BAFTAs mean to the overall awards landscape more complicated since the juries are only in place for directing and acting races, where most shockers are seen.

BAFTA on ‘Barbie’ Best Film Nomination Snub: ‘There’s No Such Thing as Expected’

Alex Ritman What happened to “Barbie”? This is likely to be one of the hot-button questions following the announcement of the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Thursday, which saw Greta Gerwig’s cultural phenomenon and box office juggernaut emerge without nods in the best film and director categories. While the film’s five BAFTA nominations (including leading actress, supporting actor and original screenplay) is, of course, still a tally to be very proud of, the figure is likely to have caught many awards-watchers off guard.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Jodie Foster graced the cover of Time magazine in 1991 when she was 28 years old and set to direct her first feature, “Little Man Tate.” She said at the time that “this is not a business that is kind to women” who aspire to be directors, but her tune has changed 32 years later. “Sometimes I read things I said in my 20s and I’m like, really? But that’s a pretty good one,” she recently told Time in 2023 during an interview for her role on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.” “When I was young, there were really no American women directors, maybe a few,” she said. “I didn’t think I was allowed to be a director.

Seth Meyers Says Jo Koy ‘Did a Great Job’ as Golden Globes Host and the ‘Deck Was Stacked Against Him’

Diego Ramos Bechara editor The comedian and host of “Late Night With Seth Meyers” told Variety he thought Jo Koy did a “great job” hosting the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards, considering the “deck was stacked against him.” On the red carpet for the Emmy Awards, Meyers was asked by Variety’s Marc Malkin what the comedian thought about Koy’s performance as host, to which he responded, “When you do a show like these, it helps to have a staff of people you know and you trust well.” Meyers continued, “So, all things considered, I thought he did a great job considering how the deck was stacked against him.” Meyers complimented Koy, saying he’s “had this incredible career” and “done it all on his own.” “That’s a real credit to Jo,” Meyers added. Koy is facing backlash for giving a divisive performance as host of the 81st Golden Globes, where he polarized viewers for, among other things, delivering what audiences believed to be a sexist joke in which he compared Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” “‘Oppenheimer’ is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and ‘Barbie’ is about a plastic doll with big boobies,” he said as the Globe’s audience responded with a muted laugh.
