How ‘The Creator’s’ Destroyer Tank Was Influenced By ‘Akira’ and Bandai Toys

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “The Creator” director and co-writer Gareth Edwards started out making documentaries for the BBC, moving to fiction with 2010’s “Monsters.” From there, he jumped into “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” For “The Creator,” a futuristic sci-fi film depicting AI robots and humans in conflict, he wanted to draw from the best aspects of each filmmaking approach. That meant staying nimble on shots while relying on a big visual effects team to create the look he wanted, according to ILM visual effects supervisor Jay Cooper. One of the biggest challenges for Cooper was the destroyer tank.

‘The Creator’ review: Dir. Gareth Edwards (2023)

In 2010, writer and director Gareth Edwards blew away cinema-goers with his haunting science-fiction tale, Monsters. The film was made on a micro-budget, but managed to appear vastly more expensive. Edwards’ skills caught the eye of the studios and he was quickly hired to direct Godzilla. After that came Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Then came a quiet period for Edwards, but now he has returned with another science-fiction epic, The Creator. Whereas Godzilla and Rogue One were both based on pre-existing properties, The Creator sees Edwards get back to his basics.

Everything we learned from Gareth Edwards during ‘The Creator’ Press Conference

Gareth Edwards burst onto the film scene with the fantastic Monsters back in 2010. The low-budget, high emotional tale of a couple connecting during an alien occupation caught the attention of the big studios. Edwards was quickly rushed into the corporation machine. He followed up Monsters in 2014 with a reboot of Godzilla before directing Star Wars prequel Rogue One in 2016. After that the filmmaker took a well earned break, but returns this week with new sci-fi action epic, The Creator. Starring John David Washington and Madeleine Yuna Voyles, The Creator is set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence.

Gareth Edwards Says He’d Turn Down James Bond & Suggests He Won’t Go Back To Franchise Filmmaking

Filmmaker Gareth Edwards is coming off his epic sci-fi original film, “The Creator,” a film that saved millions of dollars in VFX by essentially doing it all after the fact. Meaning instead of setting up expensive green screens, blue screens, and mo-cap suits to capture the spots where VFX would typically be inserted, Edwards and his team just shot the movie generally as one would in the wild and then basically Photoshopped on all the VFX afterward (that’s not the most technical version, but probably the most accurate the audiences will understand; read our ‘Creator’ review here).

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was a resourceful sci-fi endeavor with an $80 million production budget, but its visuals are on par with epic blockbusters that cost three times that amount. Rather than shoot on a studio backlot, the filmmaker behind “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opted to shoot in eight different countries, including Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Japan. For an all-out climatic action sequence set in Thailand, a village comes under attack by the U.S.

‘Saw X’ Leads Previews With $2M, ‘The Creator’ $1.6M – Box Office

Hopefully three wide releases can wake up what’s been a relatively sleep time at the box office, ratcheted down by the SAG-AFTRA strike. With New Regency/20th Century Studios/Disney’s original Gareth Edwards sci-fi movie The Creator, Paramount and Spin Master’s PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and Lionsgate’s Saw X, the top three movies look to make around $45M. All three of them are vying for No. 1 with a high teens take, however, it’s likely a two-way race between PAW Patrol 2 and The Creator since both pics have had the loudest marketing campaigns, and Lionsgate usually executes their smaller budgeted movies on the cheap.

Gareth Edwards Reflects On ‘Rogue One’ & “The Unstoppable Machine” Of Studio Filmmaking

Gareth Edwards returns to theaters this weekend with “The Creator,” a sci-fi epic that’s his first feature since 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” But is a return to big-budget blockbuster filmmaking for the director? Kind of, sort of, but not quite. “The Creator” boasts an $80 budget, still a hefty price tag these days, but mild in comparison to the estimated $265 million for “Rogue One” and the $160 for Edward’s 2014 film “Godzilla.” READ MORE: ‘The Creator’ Final Trailer: Gareth Edwards’ Sci-Fi Epic About The War Between Humans & A.I.

A familiar mélange and pastiche of sci-fi-tropes you’ve seen and felt before, filmmaker Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction drama, “The Creator,” is recognizable but, nonetheless, largely compelling— skillfully understanding the crucial balance of blockbuster scale and grounding character intimacy. Its intriguing examination of what constitutes a sentient being—coupled with its aesthetic mix of lo-fi, gritty, and grimy tech blended with sleeker, cleaner, and austerely traditional visual references to the future— makes for an engaging experience clearly designed for the big screen.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic The creator of “The Creator,” Gareth Edwards, started his filmmaking career teaching himself VFX at home. ‘The Creator’ Review: John David Washington Bonds With All-Powerful AI Child In Gareth Edward’s Remarkable Sci Fi Action Adventure That Paints A Future All Too Possible

Director, Producer, and Co-Writer (with Chris Weitz) Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has been working on his idea for an original science fiction tale involving human interaction with advanced AI childfor many years. Now that The Creator is finally reaching the screen I would say it is more like science fact, or at least a plausible facsimile. With recent warnings from Silcon Valley leaders about imminent dangers with the alarming speed of AI progress, and all the talk (especially with the guild strikes) about the threat of AI technology invading and possibly even shifting out of our control in frightening ways, Edwards has cooked up a hell of a story in which AI just might be the good guys – or robots as it were – in a world where humans could be losing the upper hand.
