Ellise Shafer ATX TV Festival has added the premieres of “Righteous Gemstones” Season 3 and the second season of Freeform’s “Cruel Summer” to the lineup of its 12th edition, taking place June 1-4 in Austin, Texas. HBO will host the world premiere screening of the third season of televangelist comedy “The Righteous Gemstones” at the festival, followed by a conversation with Danny McBride, the show’s star, creator, writer and executive producer. Season 3 of the series premieres this summer. “Cruel Summer,” Freeform’s hit anthology series, will also premiere its second season at the fest. Season 2 features an all-new cast and Pacific Northwest setting, and will explore three timelines centered on the Y2K era. After the screening, cast and creatives will participate in a panel discussion.

Casey Bloys was about four years into his tenure as a programming executive at HBO when he was driven to champion a project that was disliked by others at the network. At first blush, the brilliantly raunchy Danny McBride comedy “Eastbound & Down” might have seemed out of place among the erudite offerings on HBO. When the series premiered in February 2009, HBO was still known for its New York-centric (“Sex and the City”) and Hollywood-set (“Entourage”) comedies. “Eastbound” revolved around Kenny Powers, a washed-up, foulmouthed, amoral former professional baseball player who heads home to North Carolina. HBO brass weren’t sure “Eastbound” fit their high-end brand. But Bloys, then the network’s young head of comedy, knew McBride had something with the show. “I truly thought and continue to think the show is funny,” Bloys says. “And it was at a point in my career where I was learning how to be an advocate for a show. How to explain to people why something is good, why we should put our name and our money behind something.”

It looks like Peacock needs to juice its paid subscriptions some more. Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Ends, which is already set for theatrical release on October 14, will also debut on NBUniversal’s Peacock streaming service day-and-date. This is a similar practice to what happened with the previous installment of the revived Jamie Lee Curtis horror franchise, Halloween Kills, last October.
