EXCLUSIVE: John Patton Ford is writing to direct an untitled film for Netflix with 21 Laps producing. Ford wrote and directed the Aubrey Plaza-starrer Emily The Criminal. Here, he will tell the Civil War story of a Union spy named James Andrews who, with infantry volunteers, conspired to hijack a Confederate locomotive named the General. Racing along at speeds up to 60 MPH, they destroyed track to the main southern supply route behind them and shut down communications by cutting telegraph lines, all to disrupt the Confederacy’s supply line to end the war. The six surviving raiders became the first to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by Abraham Lincoln. The caper would also be the historical basis for Buster Keaton’s silent film The General.

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the first big spec sales following the resolution of the WGA strike, Ben Ketai‘s script Undying has sold to Netflix for development under its first-look feature deal with Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps.

Republic Pictures President Dan Cohen and producer Annabelle Dunne were among the main representatives of William Friedkin’s last film The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial at its posthumous world premiere at Venice Film Festival over the weekend.

Netflix has announced an animated series set in the Stranger Things universe is in development.On Monday (April 10), Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers revealed they were working on the untitled spin-off project (via Tudum), which is described as being in “the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons” they grew up with.“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realised has been absolutely thrilling,” Matt and Ross Duffer shared in a statement.The animated spin-off is executive produced by The Duffer Brothers under their Upside Down Pictures production company, alongside Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Eric Robles from Flying Bark Productions.The Duffer Brothers added: “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with – the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! Nearly all details about the show are being kept under wraps, aside from the fact that it was developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions. Robles has previously created the animated shows “Random! Cartoons,” “Fanboy & Chum Chum,” and “Glitch Techs.” “Stranger Things” creators the Duffer brothers executive produce via Upside Down Pictures along with Robles of Flying Bark as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Upside Down Pictures and 21 Laps are currently under overall deals at Netflix.

Netflix today announced a series order for a new untitled animated series set within the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things universe and developed by Flying Bark Productions and Executive Producer Eric Robles.
