Amazon Studios’ 2023 Emmy performance is probably best encapsulated by the Outstanding Comedy Series category. There is the veteran, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which years ago landed Prime Video’s first Best Series Emmy win. It is ending its five-season run in style with 14 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Moments after Daisy Jones & The Six received nine Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning, executive producers Scott and Lauren Neustadter fielded a congratulatory phone call from Reese Witherspoon.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Reese Witherspoon said in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar that filming a sex scene at 19 years old for the 1996 thriller “Fear” was not “a particularly great experience.” Directed by James Foley, “Fear” stars Witherspoon as a teenager who falls for a sinister young man played by Mark Wahlberg. One of the film’s buzziest scenes centers on Witherspoon’s character having an orgasm on a rollercoaster while being pleasured by Mark Wahlberg’s character. “I didn’t have control over it,” Witherspoon said about filming the sex scene, adding that she requested a stunt double be used for the below-the-waist shots. “It wasn’t explicit in the script that that’s what was going to happen, so that was something that I think the director thought of on his own and then asked me on set if I would do it, and I said no. It wasn’t a particularly great experience.”

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Music-related films, limited series, specials and documentaries are well-represented in the 2023 Emmy nominations — including projects like “Daisy Jones & the Six” that were shut out by the music branch in actual music categories but did just fine just about everywhere else. Actors playing famous musicians fared well. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, who portrayed George Jones and Tammy Wynette in “George & Tammy,” were nominated for best lead actor and actress in a limited series or movie. Also up in those categories, respectively, are Danielle Radcliffe, for his comic turn in the satirical title role of “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” and Riley Keough for her more serious take as a fictional singer-songwriter in “Daisy Jones.”

Succession has wrapped, but its legacy continues to grow. HBO’s two-time Outstanding Drama Series winner leads the way with 27 nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmys — two more than last year’s leading haul.

Jon Burlingame Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday. Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category. Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

this year’s Emmy nominations is the looming actors strike. The writers strike, in effect since early May, has already severely curtailed celebrating the best and brightest of the 2022-23 TV season. And now, with SAG-AFTRA almost certainly joining the WGA on the picket line in a matter of hours, there’s an air of doom over what should be a happy event.  On another, less existential level, what does Harrison Ford have to do to get an Emmy nomination?! The Emmys’ diamond anniversary brought widely expected nominations for previous Emmy favorites like “Succession,” “The White Lotus,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso.” A new shift in rules that capped the number of names voters could submit per category was expected to keep those shows from total domination of the acting categories — but they all still managed to overwhelm the supporting and guest actor categories, along with newly crowned Emmy favorite, “The Last of Us.”

Kevin Costner and “Yellowstone” were ignored, except in one technical category.Ray Liotta, who died in 2022 of heart failure at age 67, got a posthumous nod (for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, for Apple’s “Black Bird”).

HBO and sister streamer Max remain top of the Emmy nominations pile.

The nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards are being announced live in a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, July 12 starting at 8:30 a.m. PT/11:30 a.m. ET. You can watch the livestream above. The nominations also will be streamed live on Emmy.com/nominations.

The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard. Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.

Riley Keough is reportedly paying her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, $1 million in order to settle the lawsuit over control of the estate of Lisa Marie Presley, who died in January at age 54.

Lisa Marie Presley’s estate has come to an end, with Riley Keough being named as the sole trustee.Keough, who is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and also stars in Amazon Prime miniseries Daisy Jones & The Six, moved to approve the deal on Monday (June 12) at the Los Angeles Superior Court.Her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, is set to receive an undisclosed amount to drop her petition against a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s will, which replaced her as a co-trustee.The future of the estate was thrown into question following Lisa Marie’s sudden death in January. Aged 54, she was the daughter of both Priscilla and Elvis Presley, and passed away after being hospitalised for suffering cardiac arrest.“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla said in a statement at the time, announcing the news.
