End of an era. Yellowstone will officially come to a close after its fifth season, but a new series has been ordered to continue the story.
Joe Otterson TV Reporter “Yellowstone” is officially coming to an end, with the final episodes of the megahit Paramount Network series’ fifth season set to launch in November. In addition, an untitled sequel series has been ordered and will debut on Paramount Network and Paramount+ in December. The announcement comes after months of speculation that Kevin Costner would be leaving the series, reportedly over his desire to focus on the epic two-part Western feature “Horizon,” which would have seriously impacted his availability to film “Yellowstone.” “’Yellowstone’ has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from ‘1883’ to ‘Tulsa King,’ and I am confident our ‘Yellowstone’ sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,” said Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios.
Yellowstone – but possibly without Kevin Costner.Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the series follows the Dutton family (owners of the Yellowstone Dutton ranch) and the conflicts they face from groups along their shared borders – including an Indian reservation, a cattle ranch and land developers. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount CEO Chris McCarthy said that McConaughey (Interstellar) is prepared to star in a new extension series within the Yellowstone universe. Costner (The Bodyguard), who plays the lead John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton family, is rumoured to be departing from the franchise. While McCarthy said he didn’t have any updates regarding the Dances with Wolvesactor’s future on Yellowstone, he told the outlet that the Western, “wouldn’t be what it is today without Kevin, and we hope that that stays for a long time to come.”The CEO also revealed that McConaughey’s upcoming series is one of more than 10 projects in development with the show’s creator.Sheridan has two made spin-off prequel series thus far, including 1883 and 1923.Early this year, Deadline reported that the Interstellar actor had revealed that he will be leading the Yellowstone franchise extension as the series will be coming to an end shortly due to Costner’s scheduling conflicts.Costner, who is also a producer on the show, reportedly wanted to reduce his screen time.
Matthew McConaughey actively stepped away from the camera in the last few years, something he says will allow him to return to the big and small screens as a better actor. "The last few years I had a really wonderful time getting rid of a lot of those filters that come with acting," he told Dax Shepard on his "Armchair Expert" podcast.
BreAnna Bell A series of changes have taken place at Showtime. Variety has confirmed the network has canceled “Ziwe” after just two seasons and has picked up Mandy Patinkin’s “Seasoned” to series, delivering a six-episode order. Hosted and executive produced by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, the talk show focused on presenting trending hot topics concerning race, politics and other cultural issues as well as musical numbers, interviews, guest stars and comedic sketches. Guests on Season 2 included Drew Barrymore, Rowan Blanchard, Blake Griffin, Emily Ratajkowski and Mia Khalifa, among others. The series first debuted in 2021. With the loss, that leaves Showtime without a current late night talk show following the cancellation of “Desus & Mero” (which Ziwe also served as a writer on before moving to her own show). The changes come as part of Showtime’s reevaluation of the programming slate after MTV Entertainment Group president and CEO Chris McCarthy stepped in to oversee the cabler once former CEO David Nevins left in October.

There have been layoffs, series cancellations and an executive restructuring as McCarthy articulated the plans for the network, which will soon be rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime. They include multiple TV universes built around some of Showtime’s biggest series, including multiple Dexter and Billions offshoots.
