EXCLUSIVE: In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Bleecker Street has unveiled a reel showcasing both where the company has been and where it’s headed, unveiling never-before-seen footage from numerous upcoming titles.

Max said Wednesday that its adaptation of John Green‘s bestseller Turtles All the Way Down, from director Hannah Marks (Don’t Make Me Go), has been slated for release on Thursday, May 2.

EXCLUSIVE: Morning Moon Productions has named Ethan Lazar as CEO. Lazar will now oversee all aspects of the company, including its slate of film and television projects, and music arm. Kyle Owens and Austen Rydell, who co-founded Morning Moon, have been named Co- Presidents, with Dan Lotti appointed as Head of Music. Billie Lourd will continue as a partner and producer under the Morning Moon banner.

You might be asking, where has British filmmaker Andrew Haigh been, and the answer is right here and under your nose. While he hasn’t made a feature-length film since 2017’s English coming-of-age movie, “Lean On Pete,” starring Charlie Plummer, Chloë Sevigny and Travis Fimmel, he was right back on it in 2021 with The BBC miniseries “The North Water” starring Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham.

A TV documentary titled Barbie Uncovered and an adaptation of Homer’s classic The Odyssey starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are among the titles to receive cash during the latest round of U.K. Global Screen Fund awards.

On “Barbie Uncovered,” an unofficial majority U.K. co-production with New Zealand, the U.K. producers are Ross Wilson from RW Productions and Alan Clements from Two Media Rivers who will co-produce with New Zealand’s Daniel Story and Cass Avery from Augusto. It will be directed by Eddie Hutton-Mills and focuses on the unknown history of the global icon Barbie and the dramatic and dark story behind the creation of the world’s most famous doll.

Thankfully there seems to have been a moratorium lately on movies that mine the LGTBQ+ experience for tragedy and awards. There’s also been a move towards authenticity, notably in the area of casting trans actors for trans roles, and both of those factors help and hinder photographer Luke Gilford’s feature debut, a film as rich in personality as a Diane Arbus snap but, dramatically, about as punchy as an instalment of High School Musical. In another year, this might be more of a problem than it actually is, since, perhaps more by coincidence than design, National Anthem arrives at a time when everything it celebrates is under attack, and such a low-key affirmation of personal growth and freedom might actually be what we really need right now.

EXCLUSIVE: Black Adam, The Old Guard and Aladdin star Marwan Kenzari is set to join Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in The Return, which is due to film this spring.

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Bleecker Street continues its acquisition spree with the pick-up of historical epic “The Return,” which reunites Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. The project, which will be based on Homer’s ancient classic “The Odyssey,” is directed by Academy Award nominee Uberto Pasolini and written by Edward Bond, John Collee and Pasolini. The project, announced last year, reunited “The English Patient” co-stars Fiennes and Binoche after 25 years. The pic will also star Venice Film Festival Best Young Actor Award winner Charlie Plummer, with production beginning in Greece this spring in the regions of Corfu and the Peloponnese, before continuing in Italy. Bleecker Street will release the film in theaters in 2024.

Bleecker Street has picked up North American distribution rights to Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche historical epic The Return on the eve of the European Film Market. The project, which is directed by Uberto Pasolini, is based on Homer’s ancient classic The Odyssey. 

EXCLUSIVE: Momentum Pictures has picked up domestic rights to the starry ensemble dramedy Wildflower, marking the directorial debut of Matt Smukler. The film starring Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jean Smart (Hacks), Emmy nominee Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus) and many more is slated for release on March 17th.

EXCLUSIVE: Morning Moon Productions has optioned the rights to award-winning author Michael Frank’s novel What Is Missing with Frank on board to also adapt.

David Yates’ Netflix film The Pain Hustlers has begun rounding out its cast, with Andy Garcia (Father of the Bride), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Jay Duplass (Industry), Brian d’Arcy James (West Side Story) and Chloe Coleman (My Spy) signing on to star alongside Emily Blunt and Chris Evans.

Guy Lodge Film CriticA cemetery is not an auspicious choice of rendezvous point for an estranged father and son arranging what might be one last meeting in “A Perfect Day for Caribou,” but the dry joke of Jeff Rutherford’s tender, affectingly reserved first feature is that things get more melancholic still when they leave its glum confines. Set over the course of a single day on the fringes of some dead American anytown, this at once quiet and talkative two-hander covers no especially new ground, but strides known territory with a keen eye for lonesome landscapes, and an ear for the eternal communicative impasse felt by men who know each other all too well and not at all. Sturdy, thoughtful performances from Jeb Berrier and, in particular, rising star Charlie Plummer should hook distributor interest in this low-key indie following its premiere in Locarno’s newcomer-oriented Cineasti de Presente strand.

EXCLUSIVE: Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga are set to star New Line and Picturestart’s Sweethearts with Dollface creator Jordan Weiss on board to direct. The film will be produced by Picturestart for New Line Cinema and is currently in production. Weiss also co-wrote the script with Dan Brier. Caleb Hearon, Tramell Tillman and Christine Taylor are also part of the ensemble.

EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of the Cannes market, Bankside Films has picked up international rights to Oren Moverman project Raised Eyebrows.

Roland Emmerich’s big-budget sci-fi disaster pic Moonfall has been set for a March 25 release in China (check out the new poster below). The movie, which released via Lionsgate domestically on February 4, is heavily backed by China’s Huayi, so this is an important piece of its recoupment prospects. The China date falls one week after the PRC start of Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman.

“Moonfall.” The sci-fi action film stars Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson (who also starred in Emmerich’s “Midway”) as astronauts who take up the task of saving the Earth from colliding with the moon. “Game of Thrones” alum John Bradley co-stars as K.C. Houseman, a conspiracy theorist and amateur scientist who worms his way into the missions, as well as Carolina Bartczak as the ex-wife of Wilson’s Brian Harper and Michael Peña as her new husband.

Zack Sharf Geoffrey Rush is set to play iconic comedian Groucho Marx in “Raised Eyebrows,” writer-director Oren Moverman’s upcoming adaptation of Steve Stoliar’s memoir “Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House.” Moverman, whose credits include co-writing the Brian Wilson biopic “Love & Mercy” and writing and directing “Time Out of Mind,”  worked on the “Raising Eyebrows” script with Stoliar. Rush will star opposite Charlie Plummer and Sienna Miller.“Raised Eyebrows” is set between 1973-1977 and stars Plummer as Stoliar, who is hired by Erin Fleming (Sienna Miller) to work with an aging and frail Groucho Marx (Rush).

Lionsgate said Wednesday that Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi pic Moonfall will be released on February 4, 2022. Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak and Donald Sutherland star in the big-canvas pic, which at a reported budget of $140 million is the biggest-budget “independent” movie to shoot in years.
