Boygenius have reflected on the positive LGBTQ+ representation across the 2024 Grammy nominations. The supergroup – comprising Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus – were nominated for six 2024 Grammys awards last week, including Album and Record Of The Year for ‘The Record’ and ‘Not Strong Enough’, respectively.Bridgers also earned a seventh nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her SZA collaboration ‘Ghost In The Machine’.In a recent interview with Billboard, Boygenius reflected on their nominations and shared their thoughts on the wider LGBTQ+ representation across all the nominees like Victoria Monét, Miley Cyrus and Brandy Clark.A post shared by boygenius (@xboygeniusx)When asked what it means to see that kind of representation in the nominations, Baker replied: “It’s cool, because when you’re saying ‘this class of people,’ or ‘this demographic of folks’ … it’s like, if there’s enough people that fit that category within the organisation, it stops becoming a novelty.”Bridgers added “or even just as much of a commodity”, to which Baker replied: “Exactly, it allows all of those people to be individuated more.”Dacus continued: “It would be so sick if the way all queer people were treated got more normal too. Like, we have a friend that, during Pride Month, said, ‘It’s cool to see the rainbow on this Shell gas station sign.

Adam Mac Cancels Concert Over Anti-Gay Protests

social media post released last Thursday, Mac, a native of Russellville, Kentucky, explained why he had canceled his gig at the Logan County Tobacco and Heritage Festival, where he was scheduled to headline the festival’s finale concert on October 14.In the video, Mac explained that a member of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the festival, had called him to inform him that “questions” had been raised about his performance, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.“She explained to me that there were some board members and some people in town who had questions about what kind of performance I would be putting on at the Tobacco Festival, and wanted to ensure that I would not be promoting homosexuality or ‘sexuality’ in a family-friendly environment,” he said. “I don’t really know what they expected I was gonna do other than just come and put on a hell of a show like we do.”Mac said he was warned that some people were “very upset” that an openly gay artist would be headlining the festival, and had informed members of the Chamber of Commerce that they intended to protest the concert as a result — a development he called “disheartening.”He defended the right of local residents to “not listen” to his music or “not come to the show,” but said he was disturbed that his mere presence at the festival would lead people to threaten to boycott or protest the festival.“I went back and forth all night long about, what is the right thing to do?” Mac said.

Brandy Clark on Going for Laughs With ‘Shucked’ and Getting Dead-Serious With a Brandi Carlile-Produced Solo Album

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Singer-songwriter Brandy Clark has enjoyed triumphs recently on two fronts. Ten years of work on the score for her first Broadway musical, “Shucked,” paid off with a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award win for her and score co-writer Shane McAnally. And the Nashville resident’s self-titled fourth album, which found her friend Brandi Carlile moving into the producer’s chair, got the kind of great reviews that augur for more Grammy nominations (on top of the 10 nods she’s already picked up over the years). While she was making one of her many visits to New York, Variety caught up with her for a Facetime feature to discuss both her new Warner Records album, one of the year’s best, and the hit musical, which has a cast album of its own. The joint timing is coincidental, of course (“Shucked” was originally tagged for a 2020 opening, with an out-of-town run in D.C. that was just about to begin when the pandemic kicked in). That she gets to talk about two home runs at once makes her career seem far from anything that ends in “-ucked,” unless lucked applies.

‘Shucked’ Co-Composer Brandy Clark on Musical’s Queer Representation: ‘If You Walk Out With Any Hate in Your Heart … You’re Probably a Descendant of Hitler’

Marc Malkin Senior Film Awards, Events & Lifestyle Editor ‘Shucked’ co-composer Brandy Clark says the ultimate goal of the Tony-nominated musical is to provide audiences with pure joy. Mixed in is also a big serving of queer representation. “I always think it’s hard to hate something that you know and love, and it’s a lot easier to hate something that’s just an idea or something you’ve heard about that you should be scared of,” Clark told me during a phone conversation from the Drama Desk Awards in New York City, where she and co-composer Shane McAnally were presented with the award for outstanding music. “So I think if you walk out of ‘Shucked’ with any hate in your heart, I don’t know if I can help you. You’re probably a descendant of Hitler.”
