Steven J. Horowitz Senior Music Writer Nearly three years after a crowd crush at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival left 10 concertgoers dead, event promoter Live Nation has settled nine of the 10 wrongful death lawsuits that came in the wake of the catastrophe. News of the settlements comes as one of the lawsuits was set to go to trial this week.
Jury selection was set to begin on Tuesday in the suit filed by the family of Madison Dubiski, a 23-year-old who resided in Houston, according to the Associated Press. The settlements following the deadly event arrive after the Justice Department revealed plans last month to sue Live Nation for antitrust violations as soon as this month. The suit would claim the company “has leveraged its dominance in a way that undermined competition for ticketing events,” creating an environment where the entity monopolizes the industry and beyond.
Live Nation attorney Neal Manne explained during a hearing today (May 8) that nine of the lawsuits against the promotion company and Scott had been settled, including that of Dubiski. Settlement terms were not disclosed due to a gag order. The one lawsuit that remains is from the family of nine-year-old Ezra Blount, the youngest to pass away in the catastrophe, and the family’s attorney said that they plan to take the case to trial.
Astroworld Festival first took place on Nov. 5, 2021 at NRG Park in Houston, Texas. The crush of concertgoers left eight people dead on site, as well as two more who later passed away in the hospital.

Sources close to the situation say American record producer Southside was also seen pushing Edwards, which is what possibly led to the escalation of the fight between Scott and Edwards.

concert ticket prices and hurt artists.“It is time to break up Live Nation,” said US Attorney General Merrick Garland.Concert fans and politicians for years have been calling for a re-examination of Live Nation’s purchase of Ticketmaster in 2010, especially after the ticket seller in 2022 botched sales to Taylor Swift’s first concert tour in years, sending fans into hours-long online queues, charging prices that customers said were too high and drawing charges of poor service.Thursday’s legal action underscores the aggressive approach President Biden’s antitrust enforcers have adopted as they seek to create more competition in a wide range of industries, from Big Tech to healthcare to groceries.“Live Nation relies on unlawful, anticompetitive conduct to exercise its monopolistic control over the live events industry in the United States at the cost of fans, artists, smaller promoters, and venue operators,” Garland said, adding that as a result fans pay more in fees, artists have fewer opportunities to perform and smaller promoters get squeezed out.Shares of Live Nation were trading down 5%.Live Nation called the suit a possible “PR win for the DOJ in the short term,” but said the entertainment company would prevail in court. The lawsuit “won’t solve the issues fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees, and access to in-demand shows.”“There is more competition than ever in the live events market,” it added. The suit says Live Nation directly manages more than 400 musical artists and controls around 60% of concert promotions at major venues.
Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music As expected, the United States Department of Justice sued Live Nation and Ticketmaster for antitrust violations on Thursday, a move that could change the shape of the multibillion-company that is the world’s largest live entertainment organization and owns Ticketmaster, North America’s biggest ticket vendor.
