The Pretenders debut new songs during intimate gig at The Great Escape

Since the release of Love, Damini last July, Burna Boy has largely focused on touring the world and letting the accolades pour in. His busy summer includes a headlining slot at Afro Nation Detroit and a stadium show at New York’s Citi Field.

Love to Love You, Donna Summer is not just a documentary, it’s a hymn to the life and times of the indisputable queen of disco. The film conveys Donna Summer’s journey from the gospel churches of Boston to the dance floors that defined an era. Directed by first-time helmer and Summer’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano and Roger Ross Williams (The Apollo, Traveling While Black), Love to Love You weaves together interviews, footage and the singer’s infectious music to deliver a new perspective on the life of a vocal powerhouse. As part of the Deadline FYC House + HBO Max Event series, we spoke with Sudano, Williams and producer David Blackman on the red carpet at the New York premiere.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic I reckon there are more ideas per second of screentime in “Elemental” than any other Pixar movie to date. So why does this imagination-teasing opposites-attract rom-com feel like a misfire? No one can accuse director Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur”) or his team of under-thinking the ultra-creative studio’s latest high-concept feature, which takes the four elements as identified by various ancient cultures — Fire, Water, Earth and Air — and reimagines them as uneasy neighbors in a crowded modern metropolis. But fun as it can be to soak in the movie’s cheeky sense of detail (from flame-retardant costumes to blink-and-you-miss-them background puns), the whole scenario seems forced: so much world-building to tell a story better suited to flesh-and-blood human characters.

Beyond the hoopla, Swift’s May 26 NYC show at MetLife Stadium was a dazzling display of an artist at the height of her powers, able to elevate her success over her previously-set peaks. Swift paved the way to the “Eras Tour” via a wildly productive quarantine, when she recorded her sound-shifting trilogy of albums “Folklore,” “Evermore,” and “Midnights.” Those records broadened her appeal and won new fans, but her audience wondered how she’d ever be able to properly tour that trio plus her previous album, “Lover,” the tour of which was canceled because of COVID-19.

New Jersey concerts this weekend, the track has her fans absolutely convinced that she's singing about former flame Joe Alwyn, 32.  Confessional as ever, the 12-time Grammy winner, 33 – who is currently being romanced by Matt Healey – chronicles the end of her relationship, lamenting about whether or not she should finally pull the plug and hinting at what brought the relationship to an end.  Taylor brought on the waterworks with her bridge, singing: 'I wouldn't marry me either/ A pathological people pleaser/ Who only wanted you to see her.

Foo Fighters played their first full concert of 2023 last night, featuring new drummer Josh Freese. The Cure debuted a new song called ‘Another Happy Birthday’ during their first show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles yesterday (May 23).The band are performing three nights at the venue as part of their North American tour, which kicked off earlier this month, with the next two shows scheduled for today (May 24) and tomorrow (May 25).The plaintive new track opens with an extended instrumental section and mournful piano before frontman Robert Smith sings: “It’s harder to hold on / With every passing year / As the memories fade / You slowly disappear.”“And your birthday is the worst day / I’m singing to a ghost / Happy birthday / I forget how it goes,” he goes on. Foo Fighters debuted their new track ‘Nothing At All’ in a livestream yesterday (May 21).The livestream, titled Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts, was recorded at the band’s 606 studios in Northridge, California. It featured debut performances of songs from their forthcoming album, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the recording.The band played an eight-song set during their rehearsal, which was shot in black and white.

Blur played an intimate warm up show in their hometown of Colchester last night (May 19) ahead of their two huge concerts at Wembley Stadium.The Britpop icons performed in front of a tiny crowd at the town’s Arts Centre for a two-hour set that saw the band pull from across their back catalogue and air two songs from their forthcoming new album ‘The Ballad Of Darren’.It comes after Colchester Council’s culture boss called for Blur to stage a reunion gig in the Essex city last year.Speaking about the gig, their first in eight years, ahead of their performance at a press conference in Colchester Castle, frontman Damon Albarn said: “How we play tonight is kind of how we will play at Wembley although hopefully it will be a bit better there. But the reason why we’re doing the shows at Wembley are exactly the same as why we’re doing this one here.”Kicking off with rollicking new track ‘St Charles Square’ from their forthcoming new album ‘The Ballad Of Darren’ – footage of which you can view below – the band then launched straight into classic hit single ‘There’s No Other Way’ before they performed 1992 rarity ‘Popscene’ for the first time since 2013.
