But it’s clearly a controversial matter as half of Brits claim to have never had sex on their periods.
And if you haven’t given yourself some literal self-love while you’re menstruating, then you’re also missing out according to the two experts OK! quizzed on the subject. We exclusively spoke to Dr Charlotte Cassis, an obstetrics and gynaecology consultant, for her views on this matter.
Is there a medical reason not to have ‘period sex’? “We all remember the fact that the ‘tampon scene’ was cut from the 50 shades film,” says Dr Cassis. “But there is no reason why you can’t have sex when you are on your period.
“You won’t cause any harm to your body having sex on your period – some men worry about this. What’s most important is that you and your partner are comfortable and enjoying it.
“It’s also important to remember that ‘sex’ is much more than just penis in vagina (that’s a very cis heteronormative view) and your period can be a good time to explore other ways of giving and receiving pleasure.” Can you still get pregnant on your period? Dr Cassis says: “If your cycles are very regular, you can be confident that at the beginning of your period you can’t get pregnant,” says Dr Cassis. “But don’t get caught out – if you have irregular bleeding, or long periods with a short cycle you could already be ovulating.” She warns that when you feel like
