‘Page One’ Film Review: Doc Reveals New York Times’ Digital Dilemma

This review of “Page One” was first published on January 24, 2011 after the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.  It’s kind of weird for me to watch “Page One,” a year-long chronicle of my former colleagues on the media desk of The New York Times and their struggle to produce journalism in this most challenging of times. The film, which starts around the time I started TheWrap in 2009 after having left the paper, is kind of like watching the conversation continue in the room after you’ve walked out.On the one hand, the film directed by Andrew Rossi does an able job of documenting the critically important role that the Times continues to play in news-gathering and dissemination – and why it can be so damn exciting to be there. On the other hand, the film gives a rather superficial assessment of what everybody really wants to know: Will the Times make it, or not? Can the newspaper of record change fast enough, dramatically enough, to adjust to an upside-down business model? That he doesn’t answer. In 2008, the Times cut 100 jobs, borrowed $250 million and re-leased its building. In 2009, it cut another 100 jobs.It is distinctly odd to hear someone say on film exactly what I felt at that tie: “The mood is funereal.” And, I might have added, not conducive to doing great journalism. The team on which he focuses includes heroically smart and dedicated journalists – David Carr, Brian Stelter, Bruce Headlam (proud to say I’ve worked with two of them, hope one day to work with the third) who make up much of the media desk. The challenge of the media desk is even more profound – to chronicle the potential demise of an industry of which you are a part.

NFL denies suggestion Eminem was banned from taking knee at the Super Bowl

When Eminem finished performing his song "Lose Yourself" during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show he took a knee. Though unconfirmed by the man himself, many have interpreted this as a show of support for Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers player who was largely ostracized by the league after he began kneeling before games in 2016. Early reports from Sunday suggested that Eminem had been prohibited from making the gesture while on stage, and that his decision to do it went against the NFL's demands.

Miley Cyrus, Green Day span decades in pre-Super Bowl show

LOS ANGELES -- Miley Cyrus has only been alive for about half the Super Bowls ever played, but her setlist on the eve of the 56th spanned the whole history of the big game and then some.Cyrus and mashed up songs from the 60s, 80s and 90s with her own at the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest on Saturday night. The 29-year-old was the co-headliner with Green Day on the third and final night of the festival at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, where the LA Rams play the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The annual festival, which also featured Halsey, Machine Gun Kelly, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton and Mickey Guyton, prides itself on bringing together artists from across genres, but Cyrus did that all by herself, blending country and pop rock, dance pop and alternative rock. She sang Nancy Sinatra's “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” from 1966 — the year before the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first Super Bowl at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — as an intro to her own 2007 “See You Again."“I hope this show is a representation of how you never need to choose who you want to be. You can be everything and anything," Cyrus said as she donned a cowboy hat and pulled an oversized sportscoat over the futuristic Gucci tracksuit she took the stage wearing.

Hannah Waddingham Talks 'Ted Lasso' Season 3 and Her Super Bowl Commercial Debut (Exclusive)

Hannah Waddingham has no idea what to expect!«They are just brilliant, brilliant brains, but they know better than to tell me anything at all,» said the actress, who plays AFC Richmond team owner Rebecca Welton, of the beloved Apple TV+ show's creative team, which includes creator and star Jason Sudeikis.Waddingham confirmed to ET that after some delays, the show is due to start production on season 3 in early March. Much ado has been made about the series' planned three-season run, which would make the upcoming episodes their last, but, given that the show has been such a hit with fans and critics alike, many, Waddingham included, can't help but wonder if Sudeikis might end up changing his mind.«He has always said that there is a beginning, a middle and an end,» she recalled, «which is why he was very specific about telling everyone that [season 2] was the middle, kind of vibe.»However, Waddingham admitted, «If I were Apple and Warner Bros., I'd be leaning on him like a lunatic and putting him in a corner in a little cage and giving him a notebook and a pen… It's too beautiful.»If the series ends up extending its run, it would be far from the first surprise for the actress, who earned acclaim on the West End before breaking through in television with her role as the ice queen-turned-supportive team owner.
