Rio Ferdinand believes Bruno Fernandes will 'thrive' as Manchester United captain and has urged the midfielder to continue being himself.
Fernandes was confirmed as permanent United captain on Thursday afternoon, shortly after United landed in the United States. The 28-year-old was promoted from vice-captain, following Erik ten Hag's decision to strip Harry Maguire of the armband last week.
With the maligned defender absent for much of last season, Fernandes often took on the role of captain on a temporary basis, making him the obvious choice for successor. That decision was taken on Thursday, with Ten Hag announcing the news to his squad in New Jersey.

In response to the confirmation, Ferdinand tweeted: "What an honour it is to play for @ManUtd but to be given the extra responsibility to lead the team out is something special.
"Bruno has delivered numbers and performances throughout his time in a red shirt that make his announcement as captain an inevitable one. He takes risks, he craves the responsibility, wants to be the difference - all great traits.
"I really think he will thrive. The only advice for this new role is to just be YOU and be authentic…as that’s what got you to this point! Good Luck @B_Fernandes8."
Fernandes will likely walk out as permanent United captain for the first time on Saturday, when Ten Hag's men face Arsenal in New Jersey - the first of their pre-season friendlies in the United States. The senior team then face Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund before flying back.
