R. Kelly Has Been Sentenced to 30 Years Behind Bars

Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly has been moved to a federal jail in Chicago ahead of his federal sex crimes trial set to begin on Aug. 15.  Kelly was transferred Tuesday from his jail in Brooklyn following sentencing in New York to 30 years behind bars on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

Prosecutors initially wanted Harris to get 15 years.The sentencing comes nearly five months after Harris pled guilty in a Chicago courtroom to receiving child pornography as well as traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. At the time, a statement from Harris' lawyers noted that he wanted to take responsibility for his actions and «publicly convey his remorse for the harm he has caused the victims in this case.»«Jerry is a 22-year-old young man whose story can only be understood through the lens of the extreme poverty, sexual abuse, and neglect of his childhood,» the statement reads.

Kelly was removed from suicide watch by the Metropolitan Detention Center of Brooklyn yesterday (July 5), just days after he sued the facility.The singer has been in custody at the facility following his recent 30-year sentence for the federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges he was convicted of last year.Kelly’s lawyers filed a lawsuit and temporary restraining order against the Brooklyn facility and its warden, Heriberto Tellez, alleging it has a “policy of punishing high profile inmates by placing them under the harsh conditions of suicide watch even though they are not suicidal.”The suit claimed that Kelly was being made to wear a paper smock and wasn’t allowed utensils to eat his meals, and that he was seeking “compensatory damages for all emotional distress, humiliation, pain and suffering, and other harm in an amount to be determined at trial.”According to a new court filing, Tellez has authorised the suicide watch to be lifted following a clinical assessment.

Kelly will be sentenced Wednesday in a Brooklyn court after having been found guilty in a federal sex trafficking case in New York.  Kelly, 55, was found guilty in September of sex trafficking charges where prosecutors are asking for a minimum 25-year sentence behind bars.The defense is arguing a term of 10 years or less is enough.  Kelly also awaits another trial in Chicago for child pornography and obstruction of justice charges.  Kelly was initially discovered in 1990 by Jive Records music executive Wayne Williams while he was performing at a barbecue.
