The Queen was involved in mid-air drama yesterday afternoon as her private plane was forced to abandon its landing due to lightning.
The monarch has been staying in her Scottish home of Balmoral but had left for London on her private jet on a flight from Aberdeen when the storm struck, with heavy rain and hail forcing the aircraft back into the sky.
It meant that the 13-seater plane had to circle the north of the capital for around 15 minutes before it was deemed safe to try again.
The pilot successfully landed at the second attempt at RAF Northolt, having left Aberdeen airport at around 1pm, according to Mirror Online.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said last night: “The Queen’s flight was delayed due to a lightning storm.
“All the correct procedures were followed and there were no safety concerns.”
Once the aircraft was safely on the ground, the monarch was driven to Windsor, having spent the last few days relaxing at Balmoral ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations this weekend.
Yesterday at lunchtime, the Queen was driven from Craigowan Lodge to Aberdeen airport.
Her 86ft long Embraer 135 private jet was parked out of sight away from the main terminal and took off amid a downpour after 1pm.
An hour and a half later the pilor was due to land at RAF Northolt, in North West London, The Sun reported.
But as the storm blew in, they decided to abandon their attempt to land and circled over North London before it was deemed safe enough to give it another go.
But an insider told the outlet: “In circumstances like this you take no risks and it was right to abort landing during lightning strikes.”
