A Cheshire pub once described as a ‘lost cause’ has now been named the best pub in Britain after taking the overall title at the Great British Pub Awards last night. The Cholmondeley Arms took home the award for Great British Pub of the Year and Country / Rural Pub.
The annual awards finds hostelries nominated from up and down the UK, judged in a host of categories. It showcases a the exciting variety and quality present in the UK pub scene, with an emphasis on excellence for pub goers all around the nation.
Affectionately known by locals as 'The Chum', the Cheshire boozer was a new entrant for 2023, but stormed ahead in last night's finals. Owners Tim Bird and Mary Mclaughlin put the pub's double victory and its continued success down to the team’s 'sheer enthusiasm and passion'.

Here in Greater Manchester, two pubs had been shortlisted in the national awards, with independent favourite the Old Abbey Taphouse, in Hulme, taking home the Community Hero award, in recognition of its ‘hub-in-a-pub’. The Puss In Boots in Offerton, Stockport was in the Best Pub For Families category, but lost out to The Plough Normanton on the Wolds, Nottinghamshire.
The Old Abbey Taphouse is a Community Interest Company, hosting everything from music events to a ‘warm bank’, which found the pub opening its doors to allow people in the local area use its facilities during the energy crisis last winter.
