Ever wondered what the button on the seat actually does on trains?
Despite being seasoned travellers on public transport, passengers are only just discovering a mysterious switch on trains which has largely gone unnoticed.
The revelation came to light when a curious traveller posted a picture of the obscure switch on Reddit, sparking a viral conversation. It shows the switch situated below the armrest, prompting the question: "Does anyone know what this switch is for?"

While some theories were more outlandish, the consensus among social media users was unexpectedly straightforward. One commenter explained: "They took the reading lights out when they did a refit with their new branding, but left the switch in."
Echoing this sentiment, another added: "Reading lights. In all but one of the trains that I have been on, the bulbs have been blown. Look above you in the air-con vents and you will see the sockets."
A third person remarked: "Tbf if I were GWR taking reading lights out I would probably not bother removing a discrete switch."
While practical explanations dominated the discussion, some couldn't resist the opportunity to crack jokes about the mysterious switch.
One individual joked: "If you flick it the correct number of times it checks who in the carriage has their feet on the seats, and activates the spike." While another added: "It changes the fragrance of the air freshener in the driver's cab."
A third chimed in: "It's for exterminating anyone who uses a speakerphone on public transport."
Meanwhile, another user suggested there was only one way to solve the mystery. They proposed: "Press it and see what happens."
