Tom Cruise backs striking actors union in surprise appearance during negotiating session, blasts use of AI

The Hollywood Reporter. The 61-year-old reportedly rallied against the takeover of artificial intelligence in a statement now echoed by thousands of actors and entertainers in Hollywood, who are striking with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for the first time in over six decades.Cruise hopped on the call in a desperate bid to get the AMPTP to re-evaluate its stance on AI in the TV and film streaming era.The actor’s latest “Mission: Impossible” movie has ground to a halt as a result of the strike action, as have dozens of other high-profile projects, including the “Avatar” sequel, “Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool 3.”During the Zoom call, Cruise also addressed the guild’s stance on stunt actors, according to the outlet. The actor asked the AMPTP to allow performers to continue on with their press tours following the strike, due to the “fragile state of movie theaters” following the pandemic. He said promoting films is just as “important” to the actors as it is to the studio, the outlet adds. The union protecting Hollywood’s biggest A-listers on Thursday joined forces with screenwriters on the picket line after voting to shut down production across the entertainment industry, which may result in a drought of shows and movies in the near future. The SAG-AFTRA unanimously voted to stop working after their contract expired and talks broke off with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents streaming giants like Disney, Netflix, Amazon and others. The strike marks the first time the 160,000-member-strong SAG-AFTRA has walked off film and TV jobs since 1980.The actor-screenwriter strike is the first joint walkout in more than six decades. Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are demanding a rise in pay and

Vanessa Kirby and Hayley Atwell Explain How ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Pulled Off That Thrilling Mask Sequence

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” now playing in theaters. The “Mission: Impossible” movies have no shortage of death-defying stunts, but the Tom Cruise-starring action franchise is known for another iconic magic trick: its mask reveals. “Dead Reckoning Part One” features two mask reveals — in the first, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt uses a mask to infiltrate a meeting between CIA director Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) and officials from various intelligence agencies about a rogue artificial intelligence system, known as the Entity. The other is a face swap between Hayley Atwell’s Grace, a pickpocket who becomes embroiled in IMF’s hunt for the Entity, and Vanessa Kirby’s black-market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, aka the White Widow.

Pom Klementieff’s ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Villain Was Inspired by Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood, ‘Kill Bill’ … and a Shoebill Stork

Todd Gilchrist editor Named after a word that sounds similar in Korean to both “spring” and “tiger,” Pom Klementieff has appropriately showcased ebullience and viciousness throughout her career — and especially in the past few months. In May, she reprised her role as Mantis in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” empathetically shepherding her fellow outcasts through an adventure to save Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) from unapologetic MCU villain the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). She also appears in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” as Paris, a ruthless assassin who will stop at nothing to kill Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and anyone else who gets in her way. Ahead of “Dead Reckoning Part One,” Klementieff spoke to Variety about her character in the film, whose backstory she worked closely with Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie to develop. In addition to talking about how she “manifested” the opportunity to be a part of the franchise, she revealed the panorama of influences — from Jean-Paul Belmondo to animal videos on YouTube — she enlisted to ensure that audiences never forget Paris.

Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ Earns $23.8 Million in First Two Days

Brent Lang Executive Editor “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” netted $8.3 million at the box office on Thursday, pushing the action sequel’s North American gross to $23.8 million after two days of release. The film, which finds Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt hurtling off cliffs, fighting knife-wielding bad guys on trains and evading pursuers while driving a Fiat through the streets of Rome, was incredibly expensive to produce. Shot during the pandemic (with all the attendant shutdowns, delays and health protocols that were a staple of the COVID era), the budget on the film ballooned to $290 million. So “Mission: Impossible” will need to generate a lot of repeat business if it’s going to turn a profit, and it needs to boom at the global box office.
