A man threw a wine glass at his girlfriend hitting her in the face before biting another diner during a celebratory meal which ‘turned sour’. Michael Davey, 22, and his partner were dining at the Hyssop restaurant in Glossop after he had got a new job, and she got a job interview.
However, the pair began arguing, with Davey’s girlfriend acting ‘angry and volatile’ before leaving the restaurant, Minshull Street Crown Court heard. She then returned and was still ‘enraged’, a judge said.
Davey reacted violently by picking up a wine glass and throwing it, prosecutor Andrew Molloy said. He would later claim that his intention was to simply throw the glass, but it was hurled with such force that it hit his partner in the face causing numerous cuts.

Other diners, whose nights were said to be ‘completely ruined’ by the couple’s behaviour, attempted to intervene to try and calm things down. One man who tried to restrain him was bitten on the thumb by Davey, which broke the skin and caused it to bleed.
“He had Hepatitis B injections and Tetanus injections which caused distress, anxiety and affected his mental health,” Mr Molloy said. Another man also received bruising to his arm during the melee.
His partner did not give a victim personal statement and was ‘reluctant to discuss what happened’ with the police. Davey was said to have no previous convictions or cautions recorded against him.
In mitigation, barrister Daniel Calder said Davey wished to apologise to his partner, the victims and all those present at the restaurant for his ‘dreadful and very frightening behaviour’. He said his client had experienced grief in his close
