Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has become a fixture at events as a senior member of the royal family since her wedding in 2011.
Tradition dictated that only people who have married into the royal family would be invited to family occasions like Christmas and Easter. That was the case for Kate Middleton who didn't join the official royal Christmas celebration with Prince William until the Christmas after they married.
However, Meghan Markle joined the royal family Christmas festivities whilst engaged to Prince Harry years later. Royal fans have wondered if Kate had been issued the same invitation during her years as William's girlfriend, and according to a royal expert, she was first invited back in 2006 - and declined.
Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers, claims the late Queen broke from tradition and extended her first invitation to an unmarried partner for the family's traditional Christmas lunch.
Kate, who was then 24, reportedly declined the 'historic' request, reports the Mirror. In his biography, he writes that Kate "would go to Sandringham on Christmas Day only when she was engaged".
He explains: "By 2006, the couple had been dating seriously for the best part of five years. Yet when William invited Kate to join him that year at Sandringham for the Royal Family's traditional Christmas lunch, she refused. It was the first time the Queen had extended such an invitation to an unregistered 'girlfriend', but Kate had her own take on that break with tradition: she would go to Sandringham on Christmas Day only when she was engaged and had a ring to prove it."
Now having been part of the royal family for 12 years, Kate is regularly seen on engagements, but she will miss one major event next month.
