David Zaslav spoke to investors on Aug. 4, the very first question was about his decision, announced two days earlier, to cancel the release of DC comics adaptation “Batgirl,” taking the HBO Max production (as well as “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt”) as a tax write-down instead.
If Zaslav hoped his answer might help to quell the firestorm that choice created across the industry, he appears to have done the opposite.Zaslav made public what had been reported and rumored for months: that the company had “restructured” to create a team with a “10-year plan focusing just on DC” that would be “similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin Feige at Disney.” But the executive, who took the reins of the company in April, did not disclose who would be a part of that team, nor did he acknowledge that Walter Hamada, the executive who’s led the DC Films unit since 2018, actually has a long term plan for DC’s cinematic universe and has been in the middle of implementing it.And while Zaslav’s newly announced “reset” for DC appeared to dismiss Hamada and his team’s preparations, the lack of specifics, and some mixed signals, has created an atmosphere of confusion — and rampant speculation — over the future of more than a dozen DC film and TV projects already in the pipeline. As it stands, only one new DC feature project currently has a greenlight post-merger: “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2024. The follow-up to the wildly successful 2019 “Joker,” which grossed $1.07 billion globally, comes with a much bigger price tag than the first.

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which just debuted on Disney+, is arguably the most delightful Marvel Studios series yet. Created by Jessica Gao and starring Tatiana Maslany as the lawyer-turned-superhero, “She-Hulk” is effervescent and refreshing, a balmy tonic after the darkness of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and other, more somber Marvel Studios productions.
More tabloid mishaps for Flash star Ezra Miller as the Vermont State Police have charged the actor with a burglary incident back in May.
Zack Sharf “Avengers: Endgame” killed off Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige originally wanted an even bigger bloodbath. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery made a drastic decision: axing a nearly completed “Batgirl” movie, shocking many fans and non-fans alike with the news that a $90 million-budgeted superhero pic would never see the light of day.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, “Hamada has now agreed to remain in his post at least until the Oct. 21 release of the Dwayne Johnson film ‘Black Adam.'” An insider added that there is no time frame for Hamada’s decision and he is taking his time to revaluate the situation.

Good afternoon Insiders. We have truly entered holiday season but in TV and film Land things simply don’t slow down. I’m Max Goldbart and here’s your list of the week’s biggest headlines.
If you were one of the millions of Marvel fans in the early screenings of “Avengers: Endgame,” it’s an understatement to say there were multiple moments of pure emotion, especially during the deaths of characters such as Black Widow and, obviously, Iron Man. But according to the Russo Brothers, the filmmakers behind the superhero epic, there were discussions that would have led to several more massive deaths in the film.
In terms of modern-day influence on a genre, you would be hard-pressed to find a more influential film than “John Wick.” Since that film’s release in 2014, “John Wick” has gone on to be the film that most action features since have tried to emulate. From the fight choreography to the revenge story to just about everything else, studios and filmmakers have tried to copy (mostly failing) what director Chad Stahelski and his crew were able to do nearly a decade ago.
Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that during the “blue sky” phase of brainstorming what the story of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” would be, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige toyed with the idea of killing off all the original Avengers – not just Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, but also Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.“Kevin did actually pitch at one point taking all the OGs off the board,” Joe Russo said. “We thought it was way too aggressive and that the audience wouldn’t be able to process it, and that in fact picking one or two characters to make sacrifices throughout the movie might give you moments throughout the film where the action could stop and you could have emotional catharsis and then continue with the narrative and then have more emotional catharsis.”Joe’s brother and co-director Anthony Russo was quick to add that this was never scripted and was merely a conceptual idea: “That was early days.
Over the weekend, Marvel Studios announced their big Phase 5 and Phase 6 plans with a slate of titles/release dates. Of course, their “Fantastic Four” was part of those updates, and we learned that the Phase 6 pic is set for release on November 8, 2024.
Zack Sharf Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed at Comic-Con that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally get more “Avengers” movies with the 2025 releases of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The first three “Avengers” movies were all separated by three years each, while one year separated the debuts of “Infinity War” and “Endgame.” With “The Kang Dynasty” set for May 2025, there will officially be a six-year Avengers gap on the big screen. Feige recently explained to MTV News the long hiatus.“The truth is, when we were doing Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3, there were less projects over more years,” Feige said.
