There’s just a few weeks to go until Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens and fans have already started the countdown. But the question on everyone’s lips is, who will be the next to fall under the Strictly curse? Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty was the focus of last year’s TV contest as viewers were left stunned over his ‘almost kiss’ with Katya during their routine.
Now, one year on, the sportsman has split from his girlfriend Eiri Munro, with whom he shares a two-year-old son called George. In a lengthy social media post Adam wrote: “Eiri and George, I’m sorry for letting you down.” Countless celebrities have fallen foul of the Strictly curse since the show began in 2004.
But what is it that’s made the curse linger on for so many years, and will it ever end? Celebrity psychologist Dr Richard Reid, who's worked with A-listers, CEOs and royalty, thinks he has the answer… “When we grow as a person it’s a fantastic feeling, but it also affects the dynamics of our relationships,” he reveals. “Often we connect with a person and enter a relationship based on how we are at that moment in time.” The challenge within our love lives comes when we begin to grow and external factors come into play.
“Strictly sees these celebrities enter into a new situation, and not necessarily one that they’ve actually chosen [in terms of who they’re partnered with],” comments Richard. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to try something new and the experience makes them feel empowered.” Taking part in the show and connecting with people from all walks on life can have massive effects - both good and bad, he explains.
