Omicron has caused cases to surge throughout Scotland and across the world.
Despite symptoms often being less severe, transmissibility of the strain is higher than previous variants which has been felt in Scotland with thousands forced to isolate over the festive period.
There are some key differences between Omicron infection and previous strains of the virus.
These differences mean symptoms may not be the same and may not last as long as well as a shorter incubation period.
But when are you infectious, how long are you likely to feel under the weather and what signs should you look out for?
Here is everything you need to know.
Despite Omicron now being the dominant strain in Scotland, the variant is still pretty new which means data is limited.
However, it is suggested symptoms usually last around five days.
Chair of the South African Medical Association Angelique Coetzee - who first identified Omicron - stated the variant passes through the body must faster than other strains of coronavirus.
Dr Coetzee told the Daily Mail : "The symptoms presenting in those with Omicron are very, very mild compared with those we see with the far more dangerous Delta variant… After about five days [the symptoms] clear up, and that’s it."
Despite symptoms often lasting for a shorter period of time - as well as many cases showing no symptoms at all - you can spread the virus.
It is therefore worthwhile noting that even if you are asymptomatic, you could pass Omicron to others.
This means you should continue to stick to the isolation rules even if you are feeling better before your seven or ten days are up.
Scotland's isolation rules mean those infected can cut their isolation period from ten to seven days if they test negative on lateral
