Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Set during the Civil War, a long way from the front lines, Roberto Minervini’s “The Damned” continues the Italian helmer’s career-long examination of the rifts and affinities between overlooked segments of American society. Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Italian-born and Texas-based director Roberto Minervini is known for making hard-hitting documentaries that dissect the backwaters of American society, such as his so-called Texas trilogy comprising “The Passage,” “Low Tide” and “Stop the Pounding Heart.” His most recent doc, “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?,” about a community of Black people in New Orleans during the summer of 2017 – when a string of brutal killings of Black men sent shockwaves throughout the country – launched from the Venice competition section in 2018. “The Damned,” which premieres on Thursday in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and is Minervini’s first fiction feature, is set during the American Civil War in the winter of 1862.
House of the Dragon stars, Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy, might feud on-screen, but in real life, they both agree going viral and becoming a meme is not a good experience.

That would be the Negroni Spagliato meme. It all started when Cookie and D’Arcy were flown from San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022 to San Francisco to shoot promos for “House of the Dragon.” HBO tasked the two actors with asking each other questions on video.

The first looks of the show have teased the glamor and romance audiences are used to, as well as put a spotlight on Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), whose romance will be central to the third season of “Bridgerton.” Variety spoke with showrunner Jess Brownell — who took over from Chris Van Dusen — about the biggest burning questions fans have going into the new season. Season 3 introduces a new love interest for Penelope in Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), who isn’t in the books. What made you decide to add him into the equation? We’ve watched poor Penelope on the sidelines for two seasons, and I’ve always felt like Penelope is eligible if she would only work on her confidence.
