Bosses at the gas network Cadent have apologised as an emergency road closure continues to cause traffic chaos in part of Stockport.
Brabyns Brow in Marple was closed last night as part of work to fix a gas leak underneath the road. Work was suspended last week to allow the Tour of Britain cycling race to pass through the area.
However when work restarted earlier this week, Cadent said their engineers discovered that the roughly 100-year-old pipes 'were in need of immediate repairs on a larger scale than first thought.'

They say they were left with 'no option' but to dig further into the busy road. As a result, Brabyns Row was last night closed between Arkwright Road and Winnington Road. and remains shut Diversions are in place.
Cadent warned it would cause 'significant travel issues in the area.' Regular bus routes are unaffected but school services may be diverted and both are likely to be subject to delays, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said.
