More than 100 Brits taking legal action against Tui over a cruise that was cut short have questioned why the holiday giant upgraded and refunded passengers onboard another cancelled sailing.
Holidaymakers on the Marella Discovery 2 were forced to leave their cruise liner when operator Marella Cruises – run by Tui – abandoned the remainder of the sailing in January. Earlier this year, passengers launched a class legal action after being offered only a “pro rata” refund and £400 vouchers each towards another cruise.
Dot Sayer and husband Iain Marr, who had their £4500 honeymoon ruined, have hit out after Tui offered passengers on another of the operator’s vessels a 100 per cent refund following a fire.
Dot, 57, from Corstorphine in Edinburgh, said: “We recently discovered that our ship’s sister ship, Discovery 1, had a small fire on board but it was contained and thankfully no one was injured or affected. But we were furious when we found out that, due to the fire, Tui had initially decided to send all passengers home and offered those who had been onboard for six days a 100 per cent refund plus Tui vouchers.
"Cruisers who had been on for 13 days were offered a 50 per cent refund plus vouchers. Tui then changed their offer and the six-day cruisers were allowed to stay onboard to sail around the Caribbean for free with cabin upgrades and balconies.
“In our case, people were sent on long horrendous homeward journeys and were only offered partial refunds and vouchers.”
More than 900 passengers had joined the Discovery 2 on January 24 in Jamaica for a cruise. But five days into their two-week sail, the tour operator told the passengers they were being sent home a week early due to a “technical issue”.

Naveen Kumar A posh country estate where half a dozen lovers unveil their infidelities is the setting of “The Cottage,” which opened at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater tonight. Set in 1923, this comedy of manners by the playwright Sandy Ruskin is so thoroughly old-fashioned that it may come as a surprise it’s not based — like so many Broadway outings lately are — on existing material. Which is not to say that any part of it feels original. This is a paint-by-numbers sex farce, with parameters that do not extend beyond the obvious: heterosexual marriage is restrictive for all, unreasonable for many, and, oh, so thrilling to transgress. The forbidden-fruit pleasures that “The Cottage” tries to pass off as a feast, in a lavish production directed by Jason Alexander, are familiar, superficial and fleeting.
