Jamie Lang Spanish public broadcaster RTVE held its fifth annual RTVE Showcase late last week in Madrid. Eight of the network’s top shows were profiled for international buyers, and several panels debated the current state of affairs in Spain’s TV production industry. Professionals from around the world tuned into this year’s Showcase, which had the overriding theme of international co-production.
Guest speakers from across Europe attended and shared details about their recent experiences working with RTVE and what future collaborations are in the works. According to Rodolfo Domínguez, RTVE commercial director, more than 200 attendees tuned in to this year’s Showcase, including 70 international buyers from more than 30 territories. Of them, 50% were from Europe, 30% from the Americas, and the other 20% from Asia and the Middle East.
Below, we reflect on two of this year’s most internationally relevant panels and briefly break down RTVE’s original programming lineup featured during the Showcase. International Co-Production RTVE has significantly bolstered its international co-production efforts in recent years, a success story that was underscored during a panel moderated by Rafael Bardem, deputy director of program sales and licenses at RTVE. Joining him were Aleksandra Martinovic, director of the multimedia division at Telekom Srbija in Serbia; Susanne Frank, drama director at ZDF Studios in Germany; Patricia Motilla, a tax lawyer from Spain’s Andersen Tax; and Plano a Plano general director Emilio Amaré.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Ahead of its broadcast premiere on France’s TF1, “Cat’s Eyes,” the anticipated live-action show set in Paris and based on the cult manga series, has been sold by Newen Connect to a flurry of European broadcasters. The eight-part action-packed show was picked up by Germany’s ZDF and Italy’s Rai, among others. The show was previously sold to Belgium (RTL) and Switzerland (RTS).

The Match Factory has sold to Italy (I Wonder Pictures), Spain (Elastica Films), Scandinavia (Nonstop Entertainment), South Korea (Challan), Hong Kong (Golden Scene Company), CIS (VLG.FILM LTD.), Ukraine and Baltics (Adastra Cinema), Taiwan (Catchplay), Australia and New Zealand (Madman Entertainment), Poland (Monolith), Greece (Feelgood Entertainment), the former Yugoslavia (MCF Megacom), Bulgaria (Beta Film) and Romania (Independenta Film 97).

The CG-animated film tells the story of Aisha, a young girl living in XI-century Al-Andalus in the south of modern-day Spain.

Gerhard Zeiler, president of Warner Bros. Discovery international, said an HBO output deal with Sky overseas will likely not look the same if it’s renewed. Sky has licensed content through the end of 2025 but it comes as no surprise that WBD will look to tweak that as Max expands globally. The newest film in the long-running “Apes” series also notched No. 1 in North America with $56.5 million, bringing its initial global tally to a promising $129 million.

The film has just been announced as one of highest-profile of five titles at a Ventana Sur Goes to Cannes showcase at this year’s Marché du Film.
