Emmerdale's Chas Dingle in harrowing breast cancer storyline as actress Lucy Pargeter speaks out

Emmerdale is set for a rather harrowing storyline as Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) discovers a lump on her breast, and is subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer. Recently, Chas has embarked on a fling with village doctor Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson), and in coming episodes it will be him who discovers the lump. Following the discovery, Chas is sent to a breast clinic for diagnostic tests, and is the diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.
After her diagnosis Chas decides to keep the diagnosis a secret from those around her, as she struggles with the disease and the added stress and worry following her mother Faith's (Sally Dexter) own tragic cancer story. The popular ITV soap is working closely with Breast Cancer Now, a research and support charity which was formed in 2015 when Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer merged together. Speaking ahead of the upcoming storyline, actress Lucy Pargeter said: "When the producers first discussed this storyline with me, I knew I didn’t want us to shy away from any aspect of this diagnosis for Chas.
"She saw her own mother ultimately die after an incurable breast cancer diagnosis, so for Chas to receive a breast cancer diagnosis herself, makes it all the more poignant. "Our audience knows her so well, they have seen her relationships, know her faults, her passions, her insecurities, quirks and fears." She continued: "So for them to see this story play out will be more meaningful given everything that has happened to both her and her mother. I think this is the beauty of our genre ‘Soap’.
