EMI Reportedly Reopens Lawsuit Against Kanye West Over Contractual Dispute

Kanye West and EMI have agreed to settle their contract dispute. According to court papers filed in the Southern District of New York, a settlement between the parties has been reached and the case will be dismissed on Feb.

Kanye West and EMI have settled their lawsuit over the publishing contract the artist signed with the company in 2003. According to documents viewed by Pitchfork, West and EMI notified the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on January 13 that they had “reached an agreement in principle resolving all issues.” If neither party files motions to the contrary, the suit will be officially closed on February 14, 2020.

TMZ has confirmed that publishing juggernaut EMI has reopened its lawsuit against Kanye West, despite reports to the contrary earlier this year. The legal battle began in January when West claimed that EMI had unfairly kept him in his contract; later that year, the publisher countersued West claiming he had no right to request freedom from said contract.

EMI has reopened its back-and-forth legal dispute with Kanye West, according to TMZ. The move is coming in under the wire: though the suits seemed to be settled in September, a federal judge had ruled that either party could re-open the case before Friday, December 27. According to TMZ, EMI’s lawyers wrote “unfortunately the parties have been unable to finalize the terms of the settlement agreement.”

On Jan. 6, Kanye West’s wife, Kim Kardashian-West, posted a clip on Twitter of a spiritual gathering at which West and Kid Cudi performed gospel renditions of “Violent Crimes” and “Ghost Town.” The following week, a fan-filmed video surfaced of West’s cousin and frequent collaborator, Tony Williams, speaking about West’s newly formed passion project: Sunday Service. “The goal is to be able to communicate love effectively,” says Williams in the clip.
