Telly, the smart TV start-up with a novel product (two screens instead of one) and an even more novel business plan (giving sets away for free in order to focus on ad revenue), has passed several new milestones.
The company said in a press release it has begun shipping its 55-inch dual-screen sets this week to customers participating in a public beta program. Telly plans to ship 500,000 free televisions by the end of 2023 with millions more in 2024.
Dallas Lawrence, Telly’s chief strategy officer and a former Roku exec who worked on Capitol Hill prior to moving into tech, said the company expects a big bump in demand during the holiday fourth quarter. About half of the initial run of sets has been spoken for, but a wave of promotions now that products are shipping is expected to help drive awareness online and at retail locations.
In addition to the shipments, the company has formed a number of notable partnerships. Nielsen will license Telly’s data in an effort to gain insights into viewership patterns and advertising effectiveness.
On the ad front, Magnite and Microsoft Advertising will join initial launch partner MNTN as preferred advertising partners. With voice assistants, motion tracking fitness, video games and sound bars all comprising key components of the Telly experience, the company said it has selected Harman-Kardon to provide audio technology for its free, six-driver integrated sound bar. Deals will also allow customers to integrate their Spotify and LiveOne accounts into the Telly platform.
Pluto TV founder Ilya Pozin, who founded Telly and runs it as CEO, said initial response from consumers and advertisers to the dual-screen offering has been “incredible” since the company emerged from stealth last

Selome Hailu The “Euphoria” Season 2 finale made it clear that Ashtray knows how to fight. So does the 17-year-old who plays him. Javon “Wanna” Walton has signed with Most Valuable Promotions, the boxing promotion company co-founded by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. MVP will work with Walton on brand building, content creation and event marketing as he finishes his amateur career, with his professional debut set for 2024. His first appearance with MVP will take place on Aug. 2 in Dallas, where he will participate in the open workouts as part of the Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz fight week. Along with his role in “Euphoria,” Walton is known for playing Stan in “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix, with other credits including Amazon Prime Video’s “Utopia” and the upcoming Hulu series “Under the Bridge.” In a 2022 interview with Variety, he said that it was his boxing career that led him to acting — after an appearance on Steve Harvey’s talk show where he discussed boxing, he was scouted by legendary casting director Jennifer Venditti, who was then working on “Euphoria.”
Season 2 of The Bear came in strong on Nielsen’s weekly streaming top 10, landing at No. 5. on the overall chart.
Selome Hailu Nostalgia and comfort watches always have their place on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, with shows like “NCIS” and “Gilmore Girls” regularly holding their own in competition with new hit series. During the June 19-25 viewing window, a new-old favorite took the No. 1 position: “Suits,” the USA Network legal drama that concluded in 2019 and recently landed on Netflix. “Suits” was watched for 2.3 billion minutes during this viewing period, which marked the first full week that the series has been available on Netflix — though it should be noted that “Suits” was already available on Peacock, and this statistic indicates viewership across both streamers. This is the first time in nearly four months that a title has crossed the 2 billion minute mark on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, with the most recent winner of that achievement being “The Night Agent” with 3.1 billion minutes watched from March 27 to April 2. And that happens even less with titles acquired from other networks, rather than streaming originals — “Manifest” was the last with 2.5 billion minutes watched from June 21-27 of 2021.

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Telly’s free 55-inch 4K dual-screen TV sets are set to arrive at users’ homes this week — but of course, there’s a catch. The start-up, which plans to ship some 500,000 free, ad-supported TVs in 2023 in the U.S., is calling the initial wave a “public beta program.” The company says the new Telly households represent a diverse cross-section of the U.S. population, although the initial user base overindexes on education level and household income — and also skews toward Gen Zers and millennials. According to Telly, more than 250,000 people have signed up to receive a free TV set, which displays an always-on, rotating ad unit on a 9-inch-high second screen situated below the main 55-inch one. Each unit also includes a free Chromecast with Google TV adapter. The bulk of the half-million TVs will go out in the fourth quarter of 2023, Telly chief strategy officer Dallas Lawrence said: “We think there’s no better Black Friday deal than free.”
