SNP MP Drew Hendry has asked the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) if it has “made an assessment of the potential merits of extending the upcoming cost of living payment eligibility cut off dates” for certain people claiming Universal Credit. The Shadow SNP Spokesperson for Economy specifically highlighted those on Universal Credit and in work, whose incomes have fallen as a result of ill health past the eligibility dates.
In a written response earlier this week, Minister for Social Mobility, Youth and Progression, Mims Davies MP explained how the £900 cost of living support in 2023/24 is being paid in three lump sums to “reduce the chances of someone missing out altogether” as there are three separate qualifying periods over the course of the financial year.
The next instalment, worth £300, will be made to around 8 million people between October 31 and November 19, 2023.
The DWP Minister explained to be eligible for the financial support, you must be entitled to payment of a qualifying means-tested benefit during the qualifying period, or a payment for an assessment period ending within the qualifying period. For the £300 payment, this is between August 18 and September 17, 2023.
Ms Davies added: “We have kept the eligibility rules for the cost of living payments as simple as possible to deliver them promptly and accurately.
“This reduces the chance of someone missing out altogether, as those who do not qualify for one of the payments due to their changing circumstances may qualify for another one of the payments.”
