Desperate relatives of a Kelloholm granny tried to save her from being mauled by her dog in her garden.
But the animal turned on them after leaving its owner with horrific injuries.
Emergency services were called to McConnel Street in the village around 6.25pm on Saturday following reports the woman was being attacked by her pet.
She has reportedly undergone hours of reconstructive surgery following the terrifying incident.
Family members posted on social media how the dog went to chase a cat, but turned on its owner when she tried to stop him.
The dog is then believed to have tried to attack relatives who rushed to her aid.
One said: “He went to chase a cat. He was in the garden with her. She stopped him and he turned on her, then tried attacking the family members who came to help.
“She’s had him since he was eight months old and was nearly four now. He was unsettled due to a house move and was on his lead. He was normally a big teddy bear.”
Police confirmed yesterday the woman remains in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, and that the dog has been put down.
A police spokesman said: “Police received a report of a large bulldog type dog having attacked a woman in the McConnel Street area of Kelloholm around 6.25pm on Saturday. Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment for serious injuries.
“The dog has been destroyed.
“Officers would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as enquiries were carried out in the area.”
