Drink driver jailed for reversing car over baby's head

A driver who reversed her car over a one-year-old baby has been jailed.
Mary Casey, 34, was in a grey Nissan Qashqai when she decided to overtake four vars waiting at red traffic lights before heading the wrong way down a one-way street. After driving through a corner and ignoring no entry signs, Casey lost control of the vehicle and crashed into two parked cars.
At the time of the crash on July 24, 2022, Casey had other young family members in her car, including her one-year-old great niece. The baby was taken out of the car by another passenger and was placed on the pavement by St Barnabas Road, Cambridge, Wales Online reports.

Casey then reversed the vehicle, running over the baby in the process, before continuing to drive the wrong way down a road. She eventually stopped the vehicle after it became too damaged to drive.
The one-year-old was rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital after sustaining serious injuries, including a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull, and fractured ribs. Casey and the other passengers were taken to hospital as a precaition, where Casey was found to be over the legal limit for driving.
She was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to 20 months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving after pleading guilty. The court head how Casey's intoxication was a major factor in the collision.
She also received a driving disqualification for three years and 10 months, and must take an extended re-test. PC Edd Davidson-Smith said: “This was a shocking incident where Casey has driven recklessly and has seriously injured one of her young relatives.
