Berlin’s European Film Market has gotten off to a slow start — but there are signs of life. Leonine, the new German studio formed last year by KKR’s acquisition and merger of German indies Tele Munchen Group and Universum, picked up German-speaking rights for the Gerard Butler action thriller Remote Control from STXinternational in a mid-seven-figure deal, the largest reported pact of the EFM so far.

Castle Falls, the Dolph Lundgren and Scott Adkins actioner, which Lundgren is also set to direct, has landed a number of international deals and found a home in the U.S.

Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment and Teddy Schwarzman’s Black Bear Pictures have struck an exclusive output deal that will see STXinternational, the Hustlers producer's international division, sell and distribute all Black Bear productions overseas.The deal, unveiled Wednesday in time for the Berlin Film Festival, will also see Toronto-based Elevation Pictures, in which Black Bear has a major stake, distribute all STX productions in Canada after the international box office success of pics

The Berlin International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 20 to March 1, turns 70 this year and, as with any septuagenarian, the anniversary has triggered some existential reflection.
